Does a dog barking constantly mean its unhappy, or something is wrong with it?

I live in a smll terraced townhouse with no garden. My neighbour has a dog, which is apparently mute for some reason, so we never hear it (or see it, I don't think they bring it outside). They also seem to have a part time dog, which is not mute! It used to appear once a month but is now every few days, I've never seen it, but I sure can hear it. It barks loudly and constantly for hours on end, accompanied by what sounds like crashing noises. It sounds like it is literally bouncing off the walls and is frantic. I'm not exagerating when I say constant, its every other second for hours on end, with a bit of howling thrown in.

Now obviously one concern is that it is bloody annoying for me (and especially my eldest who is terrified of dogs since being bitten, and thinks this dog is going to get him ), but also I feel really sorry for the dog. It just doesn't sound right.

But I know nothing about dogs. Do they bark like that if they are fine? Do dogs not need to go outside, to have gardens and such? The neighbours are quite odd and unapproachable, but I'm wondering if I should do something for the sake of the dog(s), as well as for myself....?

Any thouughts appreciated.

Doesn't sound right to me....investigate further, like you say, for your peace but more over for the dogs sake. My dog barks when he's playing, when he's protecting, if he's intimidated and on the odd occasion if we walk past another dog and he's feeling a little macho, he'll bark a few times just to let everyone know that he's the "king of the castle".

Poor dog and poor you too, must drive you crazy.

some dogs will bark constantly just because they have not been taught otherwise - it could just be habitual, not a sign of distress or boredom, or might be an extremely keen watch dog reporting every slight movement out there

there is a dog near me who barks constantly so I sympathise, but she is old and infirm and time is on my side!

I meant not necessarily a sign of distress or boredom - are the neighbours really too odd to approach? Could you put a note through the door or talk to the other neighbours to see what they think?

Some dogs bark because they are bored and not getting enough walks. My parents have a neighbour with a Yorkie and it barks all the time. I have never seen the neighbour take it for a walk.

dogs should be let outdoors regularly throughout the day plus taken for 1 to 2 walks per day, totalling to approx. 1 to 2 hours of actual walking per day, depending on the dog.

Boredom. A small terrace house with no garden and a dog left in all day is really quite cruel in my opinion.

A dog is fundamentally still a partly wild animal in the primitive part of its brain that needs to be used to hunt and forage.

You can complain to the council about noise nuisance.

Near me theres a beautiful black labrador thats locked out all day - all day he barks, howls and whines .

Weve informed the council and the environmental health -filled in numerous diary sheets and nothing really happens, sad really this dog is a lovely dog its the owners that are to blame-yet on my sons 16th birthday when 2 of his friends came on mopeds she had the cheek to complain at the noise at 2 in the afternoon.

I think some people are just ignorant and dont deserve beautiful pets.
