Hi, I am worried about pup but I am not sure if I am responding to his behaviour rather than to anything real IYSWIM?

Basically he has just started running around and around the house looking like something is after him. Back up, tail in, head down, licking and chewing, not making eye contact, lies down for about two seconds then up and off again...

He keeps trying to get upstairs where he is just sitting on the top step and "watching" the stairs. I tried to confine him to onme room but he is pacing around then standing by the door, then pacing again, back to the door.

He is also almost retching, not from low down but just the mouth action, I can't see anything stuck in there.

This has just come on in the last 15 mins he litterally got up off his bed having been totally normal and started all this. He looks scared

This all probably sounds much worse than it is because I am panicking, the symptoms are not that pronounced because I really am torn as to wether he is just having a bit of a mad moment or not IYSWIM.

He is not drinking extra and he has had his tea earlier on.

So, watch and wait, sit him down and make him stop, vet...shrink (for me!) ??? Please help!

No, exactly - don't worry about that unless you actually get to that point. It may just have been a one off.

We need beautifulgirls or somebody to come hold your hand a bit, methinks

thank you for all the support Bella, I really appreciate it! I am trying not to go off into the realms of what if - but it is difficult and I am now looking at every thing he does thinking "is this it....".

I will get a grip and calm down once I have actually had some sleep though, right now is not a good time to be thinking anything, never mind trying to second guess things lol!

Even if it were, say, epilepsy, it is manageable.

Am sure your lack of sleep last night is making things seem much worse than they really are. Honest. The darkest hour is the one before dawn and all that.

[hugs]

..as that Blonde nanny used to say

SarahSon · 08/12/2009 20:18

thanks!

I am sure you are right, he is laid here quite happy and snoring, his normal smelly self!

As you say most things are managable so I must stop looking at the darkest case scenario!

I have had the misfortune to meet an epileptic dog who had gone untreated for a long time (elderly and disabled owners, was all very sad as she was very much loved but uncared for IYSWIM)tbh her behaviour during an episode was very very scary (giant breed dog) and has added considerably to my fear of dogs. I guess that is why I am being so black about it all! Will pull myself out of my pit of despair now and pour myself into a bottle of wine

From what you've written, the vet doesn't know what caused last night's episode. It could be one of many, many different things. And it may not even happen again.

It sounds as though tiredness and worry is making you jump way ahead of the reality of the situation, just as Bella said.

Last night, your pup had bit of a funny half hour. It passed, you worried a lot, and the vet has since had a poke about. And found nothing.

He's pretty much guessed at the diagnosis he's come up with because he has no symptoms in front of him.

Please enjoy the wine and your dog without worrying about the very slim chance your beautiful puppy will end up like the epileptic dog you've met.

For what it's worth, and to try and put it in a tiny bit of perspective - my dogs have put me through no end of worry. From bloat/gastric torsion to meningitis to chewing batteries to dodgy lumps to all sorts.

And they're fine.

I, on the other hand have gone quite grey.

About sums it up perfectly daisy!

I'm not grey! Still blonde!
