Advice ASAP please re hampster and broken back

threeplusone · 06/12/2009 14:39

My daughters hampster has fell in its cage onto one of its toys and obviously brokenits back.. DD is holding it and comforting it.. but both DH and I know we need to kill it to put its out of its misery and pain. It has started to go incontenent.. The only method I can think of would be to suffocate the hampster whilst holding it..
I really dont know what to do as this seems inhumane. On the other hand keeping th epoor thing alive just isnt fair..
How /what would you do.. TIA...

Defo couldnt do the spade.. b ut the vets is going to cost an arm and a leg which we just dont have spare .. if it was the dog then it would be different which I know people are going to condemn me for .. But reckon 100euros + as it is sunday, call out fees..etc going to be atleast 1-2hrs .. if the vet even will for a hampster that is going to die.. and the language barrier..
Going back up and see DD now and see how the poor thing is..

oh fgs just take it to the vet - it's suffering, stop being so cruel

DisElfchanted3 · 06/12/2009 14:57

Fucking hell, horrific.

I'd get DH to put it out of its misery

He had to do similar to a bird our cat had attacked lately,

it was horrid.

Please don't leave it suffering long.

doggiesayswoof · 06/12/2009 14:58

You need to put it out of its misery if you can't afford the vet.

Marne · 06/12/2009 14:59

Drown it in a bucket of water, or vets ASAP.

SparklyGothKat · 06/12/2009 15:01

My DH had to kill a mouse that was suffering after being caught by my cat

Poor thing.

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/12/2009 15:02

plastic bag? freezer?

can't believe we are debating how it is easiest to kill a hamster.

Heated · 06/12/2009 15:03

Dh ran over a rabbit and broke its back; had to put it out if its misery with swift blow to the head with a rock; it would have been cruel to do anything else.

If not the vets then you or dh are really going to have to steel yourselves; being a pet owner means unpleasant responsibilities sometimes.

DisElfchanted3 · 06/12/2009 15:04

oh god please dont drown it or freeze it,

get your husband to use a spade of something thats surely the quickest way??

ComeOveneer · 06/12/2009 15:05

How can you tell it has broken its back????

when my cat knocked over the hamsters house and had one in its mouth, I thought one was dead, as when cat dropped it, it was just laying there. It did survive but when I phoned the vets, they said that he might die overnight from shock but said they wouldn't see it as they wouldn't be able to help it. He did live for a few more months.

You need to do something, vets or do it yourself. It does seem wrong I know, but better than its suffering

LauraIngallsWilder · 06/12/2009 15:08

I would put it in a bucket of water

Dont let it continue to suffer

Tizzyjacko · 06/12/2009 15:08

Bucket of water quickly

threeplusone · 06/12/2009 15:08

Been up to see DD and the poor thing has died whilst she was nursing/ holding it.. So going to bury it in the back garden in a while once she has said goodbye to him..

Lightning is now at peace and out of pain..

Thank you for your reponses..
Of to console my DD and explain to my two young boys why there siseter is upset..

And please stop your DD from holding it and "comforting" him, she may be making things far worse.

HugeBaublesWhatDidISayRoy · 06/12/2009 15:10

sorry about the hamster

Flightattendant · 06/12/2009 15:13

Oh poor thing

Fwiw can anyone tell me if alcohol would put it to sleep?
I hate doing the spade, but what about some surgical spirit/neat vodka on some cotton wool? Surely that'd be kinder.

then slam it

LauraIngallsWilder · 06/12/2009 15:14

I agree with mongolia

Allowing your dd to hold and comfort him is unlikely to help your dd imho
And is rather macabre

I doubt a hamster with a broken back enjoys or appreciates being nursed either = thats rather cruel too

DisElfchanted3 · 06/12/2009 15:16

Awww come on give OP a break, it was a horrid accident, she wasn't sure what to do, her DD was probaly distraught and felt holding it was keeping it comforted,

you don't exactly get a 'how to kill your hamster' leaflet when you buy the cage and wheel do you?
