Is it OK for puppies to go up and down stairs?

My golden retriever pup (8 wks tomorrow) can bound up and down the stairs. Is this OK? I'm concerned about the health of his hips.

And, honestly, when he's 6 months old and weighs 25kg, jumping up is going to be so not funny, and so much harder to train him out of.

I have not been misbehaving at all. I have been walking off, or putting him outside the door, then letting him back in when he stops whining. I am just afraid that it's all rather boring! I met someone yesterday who's 6-month golden is 35kg!!! That's about 2kg per week from now on.

35kg for a 6 mth pup sounds a bit portly, tbh - very bad for their joints if they put on too much weight too fast.

romanarama - I will take your word for it It's just a good yardstick that anything you wouldn't like a big heavy, fully toothed-up dog doing, you don't allow the cute fluffy puppy to do

Hi LBC! I was stressed wasn't I? I really did nearly get rid of her. I have to be entirely honest here and say that I really would rather NOT have a dog. But we do and that is that. And both DS and DH adore her.

Although as Bella says husbands are more difficult to train than dogs and trying to train mine into taking dog for walks at weekend is my issue. I take her in the week and at the weekend I don't even want to think about it. I just want it to happen. But I have to nag and then we all get grumpy. The poo collection is another issue. It always seems to be wet or dark when DH IS around so he has perfect excuse not to do it. And it was one of the things I said I def was not doing.

Ah, mine is my dog. Dh is not a very doggy person, and I obviously am not banking on the dcs doing much more than a cursory brush every day or two, though I think they will all enjoy the weekend walks (not first thing in the morning, that will be my treat 7/7). There will be no fights - it's my fault ergo my problem!

I'm starting training on Saturday mornings at a specialised golden r training schooln as soon as he's had enough vax. Once they've graduated from the basic commands class they can either stay in it for practice and to maintain behaviour, or graduate to gundog and suchlike if the owner is more ambitious. I want to train to retrieve game, and most especially to hunt for truffles, as we have truffle land. He could even make us a profit! (He is actually a pet though, we will still feed him if he's useless at truffling!)

Dogs are so cute aren't they? He's sleeping on my feet
