Pet Insurance - any recommendations?

Hello, we have just taken in a "rescue" cat, she is 8 years old and I guess I should get some pet insurance. Does anyone have any recommendations? The Sanctuary gave us a leaflet for Petplan but I wondered if its worth looking around or if it's all much of a muchness? Thanks in Advance - got to go and check my new charge !

I've got some with healthypets and some with petplan - I never ever get round to claiming but I guess if something major ever happened it's reassuring to know it's there!

In all the policies I've opted for max possible cover per illness or injury (I think £5k), and lifetime cover for long-term conditions - as some only cover £xk per year which can be eaten up surprisingly quickly if you are unlucky.

PS - congratulations on new addition!

I have used PetPlan and Thornhill - both good companies both have paid out when claimed.

Used to have Petplan but switched to Sainsburys pet insurance for our 2 cats + puppy - cheaper and just as good, think they were voted best pet insurers.

We had to put in a £700 claim for one of our cats this year - they refunded with no problems

Wow, thanks for all your quick replies that's great! I will have a look at the plans you mention and get one organised today.

Whatever you go for, make sure you get lifetime cover as many of the cheaper policies will only pay out for the first year in which an ongoing illness arises.

Also, given that you've a slightly older cat, check at what age they stop cover or suddenly start increasing the excess/% of the bill you pay.

Many congrats on your new addition

There's a good thread on moneysavingexpert which is worth a look in their pet forum. I ended up going with Axa for our puppy.

I just switched from Direct Line to Sainsbury's - Direct Line was very good value the first year with introductory/online discounts, but suddenly nearly doubled at renewal. I think a lot of them do this - something to remember this time next year....

Whatever you do, go to www.quidco.com, type in pet insurance and you can see all kinds of cashback you can get if you go through them! It's great, I got £40 back on a £80 plan! (I don't work for them but everyone loves a bargain lol)

Thanks to those who've replied since I last posted - you're all stars! Will get comparing - once the new cat gets off my keyboard and pc desk
