English Bull Terriers?

I have liked these for years, I really want to get one!

Does anyone here have one, know one, any experience with them?

I've done some reading on them, and have read that they can be fantastic with children, but can be stubborn and need a firm owner!

I'm trying to talk Dh round to my way of thinking, we had a Staffie cross before, she was put down nearly 6 years ago, Dh took her in and was very upset by it.
We had said never again, but my friend has just got a dog and its got me thinking I would like another!

TIA

The ones I've known have been big softies and lovely dogs.

Good luck

SIL has one. Strong as an ox but fantastic with kids (was brought up with baby & older kids) Also great with our puppy.

Wouldn't let him within a mile of a duck though

There's a UK rescue organisation called "Bullyforus" who should be able to help and advise you. I've Googled it but I'm afraid I couldn't find contact details - my only contact is via a lady who (for family reasons, not because of the organisation) no longer works with them. I can certainly email her for you and ask her if she would post on one of the dog rescue forums such as Dogpages so you can track her down there or ask her where/how else you can get in touch if you'd like me to as it would be rude and inviting spammers to post her email address here.

If this would help please say and I will give her a shout for you.

I think there was an english bull on our rescue site the other day. www.animallifelineuk.org

Otherwise just hunt down any EB rescues you can find as alot of bullies are being put to sleep lately since the rise in bad press for staffies.

Vallhala · 16/11/2009 22:13

Ha! LuckySalem, I think we have a mutual contact - does Niall in Kent ring a bell?

LuckySalem · 16/11/2009 22:16

Yes for some reason it really does!! LOL I have NO idea why the name is in my head but its there.

Vallhala · 16/11/2009 22:19

I didn't know he had any involvement with your rescue til I recently received an email about some dogs there which he was trying to get help for - perhaps thats where it rings a bell.

You're doing a fantastic job

Sorry for hijacking your thread Izzy, back to cat litter...

LuckySalem · 16/11/2009 22:20

Perhaps..... lol.

Not cat litter ...... english bull terriers!!

Vallhala · 16/11/2009 23:04

Oh rollocks, sorry - was distracted by DD2 who is STILL awake!

izzybiz · 17/11/2009 12:20

Thanks for your answers guys, sorry I hadn't been back before, Ds1 stole the laptop from me all evening!

To be honest I hadnt thought of a rescue dog as I really wanted one from a pup, it is a shame that people are getting rid of their dogs over bad press of another breed.

I am a Staffie lover too, I think they are lovely dogs, the trouble is all these questionable characters who keep them as a status thing

Well again, thanks for the replies, Im off to google some rescue sites now, and will keep working on Dh!!

Do try some rescue sites as there are some puppies in now and then.
Also why don't you try speaking to some rescues about fostering?

This is how I finally managed to get DP to agree to a dog. If you foster they pay all teh bills and you get to play with a doggie.
Also you may find one you fall in love with that you can just keep once he sees one he wont be able to say no! lol

good luck

always had sbt growing up, and a friend bred ebts, they are lovely! id have one but dh wouldnt. we have a bm and ddb. they have rescuse pups sometimes, and lots (sadly) of them.

crispycake · 18/11/2009 17:47

I have a lovely staff, shes a pampered princess. She is so gentle and loving and great with everyone we know. They have such great characters and huge personalities i dont know how anyone can use any dog to fight and especially to look good (hard)

Sorry i know this doesnt answer your question i just felt like adding to your thread!!

Marne · 18/11/2009 17:52

I love English bulls, i used to know a man with a lovely one but she was so strong and loved to jump up for a cuddle. I decided not to get one with 2 small dc's so we decided on a Staff instead (she's a very small staff) but i would still like to get an english bull when the children are older.

I would go for a pup (not an older rescue dog) if you have small children.

ShinyAndNew · 18/11/2009 18:00

If EBT are anything like SBT, when they are pups I'd definately go to a rescue and get an older dog proven with kids. Bull Terrier pups are very very boisterous. I am experienced with 'dangerous' dogs and remember my Akita and GSD as puppies, but I was still taken aback by the sheer energy and relentlessnes of a SBT pup and in the end had to give up my ususal training methods and seek the advice of an experienced breeder.

Marne · 18/11/2009 18:15

I agree Shiny, our SBT is almost 2 years old and still thinks she's a puppy (full of energy and likes to play like a puppy), they do need a lot of time and training.

toilettrouble · 24/11/2009 12:41

I was brought up with EBT - they are heaven and love children more than adults, which is perfect. We rode ours. (Once.)

To avoid the risk of danger (vv small) check out the dog's relations before you buy.
