Recovery after spaying my puppy?

aGalChangedHerName · 15/11/2009 07:51

Went with the majority (other folk with dogs and the vet etc) and had our Bichon Molly spayed on Friday (she is 6 months)

Wish we hadn't had her done Also had 4 decidious teeth removed and had her microchipped too. She is so sad and seems really low. I know it's to be expected but i am worried.

She can get out of her bed to poo but is weeing in her bed which she didn't do even when we first got her. Is that normal?

Have to really encourage her to drink etc too. Should i phone the vet? Or is it all ok and normal?

Thanks

We had our dog spayed and microchipped when she was seven months old, and she was fine within a couple of days.

aGalChangedHerName · 15/11/2009 07:58

Could you see the place they had put it in? Molly has a big bloody looking bit where it's been inserted. Looks awful.

I would call your vet - it isn't normal for her to be like this more than 24 hours after her op. She needs checking over in case of possible infection or may just need more pain relief. Good luck and keep us posted x

aGalChangedHerName · 15/11/2009 07:59

Was she walking around and happy enough within a couple of days tho? Molly isn't moving much and the weeing thing is weird.

How is she now, AGal?

aGalChangedHerName · 15/11/2009 22:07

Got an appt with the on-call vet at 10.30am. There's no sign of infection or anything 'wrong' as such. Gave her a pain killing injection and said if she's still not drinking by tomorrow to bring her back in the morning.

Have been using a syringe to give her water and she has peed and pooped (on the floor) but i was soooo happy when she did!!!

She seems a wee bit brighter but i may take her back tomorrow anyway.

Thanks!!

Oh good - am glad she's feeling better. Maybe moisten her food a bit if she's not drinking?

Hope she's brighter again tomorrow - then your problem will be stopping her haring around before she's healed up

aGalChangedHerName · 16/11/2009 11:19

Well am def taking her back today. She has been very very sick and had the runs too

God i wish i hadn't had it done now, feeling very guilty!!

Have appointment at 2pm.

So sorry for you and Molly

Miffy was a bit down for 24 hours after being spayed but did not affect her continence. I do know that there is a risk of damage to nerves for urinary continence when spaying.

She was chipped at 3 months and there was no blood or anything.

BellaBonJovi · 16/11/2009 12:33

Don't feel guilty, aGal - in health terms it's far better to spay her. Complications are rare and hopefully she will soon be on the mend.

wrt her microchip, some dogs do bleed a bit and I'm guessing that with her parentage she has a light coloured woolly coat, which may show up any blood more than a darker coat would. By all means point it out to the vet though.

Best of luck & please let us know how you get on.

MmeLindt · 16/11/2009 12:39

We had Daphne done when she was about that age, and I felt really bad about it afterwards. I felt like we had caused her pain purely for our convienience.

It took her a few days to recover and she was not really back to her normal self until about a week or so after the op.

Hope Molly is better soon.

aGalChangedHerName · 16/11/2009 12:57

Thanks all

Yes the microchipping looks better today. She is really tiny so may look worse than it really is and as you say a white coat will also look worse.

Have been giving her tiny drinks 1ml at a time to keep her hydrated but she is vomiting yellow frothy stuff. Can't wait till 2pm!!!

Yes it is better for her long term

Will let you know how she is later x

aww just read this. So hoping she is soon on the mend.Hope vets goes OK,and they can get her sorted.
It will be worth it for her. We decided to wait to get our puppy spayed till after her first season..(after reviewing loads of conflicting advice!) and she is now in the second week of her season, and not a happy doggy. She so misses her long off lead runs, and is just generally not herself...cant wait for her season to finish...and we will be getting her spayed in 3 months...At least once your little doggy is recovered she wont have any seasons to go through.
Let us know how the vets goes.

aGalChangedHerName · 16/11/2009 17:20

Well that was awful

The vet has kept her in overnight so he can put her on a drip as she really needs fluids. He said that as she is being sick all the time whatever i am managing to spoon feed her is just coming back out.

He mentioned thait could poss be a tummy bug coming on top of her op or she could have eaten something. If she doesn't pick up tomorrow he will do blood test and x-ray.

I was sobbing all over the place when he told me she had to stay overnight,i completely lost it tbh He was very kind tho so wasn't too

God i am just praying she gets home tomorrow and she is ok!!!

MmeLindt · 16/11/2009 17:55

Oh the poor wee thing. Sounds like the vet is taking good care of her. Hope she is better tomorrow.

I cried when I brought Daphne to the vet to get spayed.

BellaBonJovi · 16/11/2009 18:13

Your poor girl They often pick up quite quickly once they're on a drip, and hopefully it's just a short lived tummy bug. I know you must be so worried but the vet and nurses will be keeping a close eye on her and she's in the best place right now. Will be thinking of you

galen · 16/11/2009 19:32

aww.bless her and you. Hope she is much brighter tomorrow and back home tearing your place up! will be thinking of her xx

aGalChangedHerName · 16/11/2009 21:57

aGalChangedHerName · 17/11/2009 06:51

MmeLindt · 17/11/2009 07:20

Fingers crossed here too.

BellaBonJovi · 17/11/2009 08:55

Yes, keeping it all crossed for you.

Am sure Daphne is crossing her little paws too, bless her - eh, MmeLindt?

BellaBonJovi · 17/11/2009 11:41

Any news, AGal?

aGalChangedHerName · 17/11/2009 12:19

Hi sorry was out this morning. Picked her up at 11.30am. She is much brighter. Had fluids overnight and an anti-emetic in the afternoon yesterday. Has kept down a little food and water so heres hoping!!

Vet said it could have just been a little traumatic for her having all 3 procedures done at once. I have to call him if she is sick again but he doesn't think she will be

Thanks all!!
