urgent - how toxic is chocolate to dogs

please can anyone help.

my dog has just been sick with a massive puddle of chocolate.

when quizzed the kids said when they got home from school the living room door was open, so dogs had gone upstairs.

my DD had a massive bag of factory seconds chocolate,(milk choc which i understand is less toxic than the dark stuff) which is now gone - not a trace of it,

ive rung vet and he said if it was 6 hours ago theres nothing i can do but sit up and monitor them. one of my dogs in particular is looking very green around the gills, the other is sleeping it off. neither of them ate tonight. (they are drinking absolutely loads which the vet said will be to sort the sugar out)
has anyone elses dog eaten a massive amount of chocolate and been ok?

they are my second babies and im really worried, DD has gone to bed crying. any help from anyone with experience would be great!
ta.

Me too, Bella. I think I'd have made Vicar's dh stay up on vomit-watch, as he left the door open - but then I am a mean and evil person (just ask my children).

My dh has done something very similar. I was doing some painting in the dining room, trying to finish a picture that was supposed to be a friend's birthday present. I wanted to take a few minutes' break, but didn't want to clear all my stuff up - especially the palette with all the blobs of acrylic paint on, and the colours I'd already mixed - so I carefully shut up the dining room, and asked dh to make sure that the boys knew why it was shut, so they'd keep it shut.

Foolishly, I assumed that dh would realise that the need for care applied to him too - but Nooooooo!! He waltzed through the dining room, leaving the door open, and the dog followed him, and went straight for my palette, pulling it off onto the floor. Luckily none of the paint got onto the carpet, but the dog ended up with raspberry pink paint round her mouth, and then got up onto the sofa and wiped her mouth on a white cushion.

Dh then got arsy with me when I was angry with him!!

Eeek, stayingsunny!

Yes, dh/dc/whoever should be put in charge of vomit watching/poo cleaning in situations like these

Hope the dogs are feeling better anyway - perhaps you are all fast asleep now?

How are the doggies this morning, Vicar?

(That sounds like something from a Carry On film somehow)

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2009 13:28

hopefully on the mend now

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/11/2009 20:30

mmeguisingt LOL!

well i had a crap night. she puked up several more times, at one point couldnt move and just lay in it - she got a bed bath and i got more cleaning up at about 3.30am!
i slept on the couch - when i say slept thats a lie - i laid on the couch - what with vomming dogs i didnt get much sleep.

she seemed better this morning, but when i got home at lunch time there were more pukey puddles to clean up

i rang the vets, they said she should be better by tomorrow.

she is perkier now, and not being sick anymore. so hopefully no lasting damage done, think she was sick enough to get rid of most of it.

DH just sort of went "doh"....
he has been told what will happen in no uncertain terms if he ever leaves the door open again, as has DD with the secret choc stash!

so i went to work on less than 3 hours sleep today....and spent my 45min lunch break cleaning up doggy vom! great eh...

Have not read the whole thread but I know it is poisonous. Depends on how much she has eaten but might be worth speaking to a vet. My DH's aunt's dog basically wolfed the grandkids chocs at Xmas last year and I know they had to end up taking her to the vet as she was quite ill - but she had eaten shedloads.

Not as bad as the time she ate a whole packet of ibuprofen - that time they had to pump her stomach.

sullysmum · 04/11/2009 20:39

Glad they seem to be on the mend.

MmeGuisingt · 04/11/2009 20:44

Glad to hear that they are both ok. You are probably in your bed already after the lack of sleep last night.

BellaBonJovi · 04/11/2009 21:01

Hope you get a better night's sleep tonight

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/11/2009 21:49

so do i! thanks everyone.

i think the 'other end' has also been affected....lawn clear up operation on the cards for tomorrow...
i think dogs are harder work than children! ive had 2 of each and at least kids grow up!

my house is like the bleeding ark...2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats! ive said no more pets!

Glad they are recovering - hope you get some rest too over the weekend, I think your DH should take kids and dogs out at the weekend and let you sleep.

I bet no-one gets choccy for xmas in your house this year!

Hopefully now nearly 10 years later the dogs are feeling better. Your links are for US numbers and as most of us are in the UK these are unhelpful at best.
