I'm really struggling and would really appreciate some advice, our dear old spaniel is very poorly and we're heartbroken.
I have another thread here about how he went off his food and vet thought dental op might help, but its not his teeth. He's nearly 14 he's now on a drip and has been for 36 hrs. He has not eaten for 5 days yet continues to have severe diarrhea. The vet describes him as still flat, no better than when I took him (he was very poorly I had to carry him in). They have run bloods but nothing obvious found. He now has abdominal pain which he didn't have yesterday, they've scanned his abdomin and found nothing obvious - even though there is a mass on his ribs that was obvious to me and the first vet we saw.
When my sisters dog died she went just the same way for a couple of weeks beforehand. Our vet says he will keep doing more tests but I'm worried we may be prolonging his pain and suffering

Any news?

I hope he is better.

It's bad news, our beautiful old boy was put to sleep this morning. We had a call from the vet first thing to say he had gone downhill overnight and had been sedated as he had seemed to be distressed. We left the kids with friends and went straight in so dh and I were with him at the end, I'm not really sure he knew we were there but I'm so glad we were.
Dd1 is 7 and devastated, dd2 is 4 and has taken it very much as matter of fact. We so sad, it came on so quick, this time last week he seemed fine but it's the best way i guess. Bless.

Oh, no. I am so sorry.

RIP Doggy.

moosemama · 11/10/2009 15:46

I am so sorry.

I'm sure he sensed you were there though. My dog was also under sedation when we were called back to the vets for him to be pts and I don't know how, but I just knew that he was aware of our presence.

Take care. x

Am very sorry. Is always a sad thing. Am sure he is resting now happily.
Thinking of you.

I am sorry - hurts like hell to lose your faithful friend.

LittleRedCar · 11/10/2009 17:34

How very sad, but you took very good care of him and did all the right things.

aristoBLACKcat · 11/10/2009 17:54

sad news dowdowpen

thinking of you, your family and doggy

this is so the hardest part of having a pet - of course they bring love and joy but heart-break too

minimu · 11/10/2009 18:10

I am so sorry

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 11/10/2009 18:33

I'm so sorry - I posted on your other thread and I was so hoping you would have positive news.
He was lucky to have owners who did all the the right things for him.

dowdowpen · 11/10/2009 21:10

Thank you to everyone for your sympathy and advice, it really has helped.
It all seems a little surreal right now, like it's all happened so quickly but I know it was the only thing we could do for him in the end. We've been remembering old times, he was in our life for so long, we have some great memories and he'll be sadly missed.
Thank you all again for helping me over the last few days.
