Someone at work as a beagle bitch. He took her to a stud and she has just given birth to 9 pups. Worth £600 - £800 each.

I am stunned!

I couldn't never imagine paying that much for a puppy. No matter how lovely they are.

If you look hard enough, you might even find a shiht-poo

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 12:44

I have heard that the problem with Labrapoodles is that you may get the size of the lab with the nonshedding poodle coat but what on earth do you do when you get a poodle that sheds like a lab?

That is interesting that they were bred as guide dogs for allergy sufferers.

Pyrocanthus · 09/10/2009 12:46

Might be the result of this union, seaglass

ABetaDad · 09/10/2009 12:52

OrmIrian - I am extremey doubtful if a Beagle pup is worth £600 - 800. They are not a rare beed.

My parents breed pedigree dogs and even the best of each litter (Springer Spaniels) go for only £200.

OrmIrian · 09/10/2009 12:53

One is already 'sold' abetadad.

the problem with all crosses is there's no way of predicting which traits will come out, which is why the Australian Guide Dog people more or less gave up on Labradoodles. There's a lot more to it than just thinking up a tee-hee name and shoving the poor dogs together - especially if one is much bigger than the other and/or has known whelping problems (like the poor pugs, who seem to be used all the time for their 'cute' factor). It's horrifically irresponsible.

Sorry, is a bit of a bee in my bonnet too.

boodeniites · 09/10/2009 12:59

even normal moggy kittens sell for £30 to £50 nowadays we let all our cats bar one have one litter that was enough we could have made a fortune off them but that is no way to treat an animal having litter after litter to make money

pofacedandproud · 09/10/2009 12:59

I would pay loads of money to find the dog we had as a child. But he was a cross breed anyway, and will never find one like him again. I think the pedigree thing has got a bit stupid, all the in breeding makes for nervous dogs with health problems.

wildfig · 09/10/2009 13:01

PS which isn't to say that there's ANYTHING wrong with your good old-fashioned Heinz 57, but the cold-eyed exploitation of puppy farmers feeding the designer cross market is just appalling.

seaglass · 09/10/2009 13:16

My sister is picking up a bichon frise puppy in a fortnight, they are not a rare breed, but they are paying £700 for it

madusa · 09/10/2009 13:19

we bought a newfoundland 11 years agpo at the cost of £900

They are about £1200 now!

Very expensive dogs but lovely temprament.

cissycharlton · 09/10/2009 13:30

I have a doodle because we love labs but dp sneezes like mad around them. He's never had a problem around our dog. I also know for an absolute fact that doodles are being trained in the uk as guide dogs.

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 13:33

Seaglass
Bichon Frise are very popular dogs atm. Loads of chic Genevan women have them. Ours is a Bichon Maltese, which looks very similar.

ABetaDad · 09/10/2009 14:21

OrmIrian - they were had.

OrmIrian · 09/10/2009 14:53

Well you'd think so wouldn't you! But I just googled and there were beagle puppies for sale from prices ranging from 525 to 900.

We have a labradoodle and she is a mongrel! When people ask what she is I say a cross breed.

And also not all labradoodles are hypo-allergencic. Ours isn't. You have to cross a F1 back with a poodle to get anything like a hypo-alleg. dog. Ours just looks like a messy labrador with a beard!

Anyway, going back to the OP....the family pet isn't to be used for this! Not only do you incur certain vets bills, puppy bills etc but you do of course risk loosing your dog during birth, complications etc

That's what we got!! She's great though

spugs · 09/10/2009 16:13

Puggles are going for £1200 , because of the high cost of puppies and the new fashion of designer crosses there are lots of complete and utter wankers people breeding litter after litter from dogs with health problems in horrific conditions. Google/you tube puppy mills/farms its awful and lots of them are in Wales!!

lukeysmummy · 09/10/2009 23:17

I have a beagle but i didnt pay anywhere near that price as he hasnt any papers which i didnt need or want as we wanted him purely as a pet hence why he was castrated at the earliest opportunity yes people do pay a lot of money for them as they arent rare as no dog would be but they are quite hard to find as they arent the most common
cant get my head round the puggles nor would i pay silly money for a mongrol dog

Beagles are soo cute i dont want to see any pics though as i get doggy broody.

Totallyfloaty35 · 10/10/2009 00:29

My Chihuashuas had puppies,it was nightmare would never breed any dog again,so expensiveand such hard work.
Buying a Newfoundland soon, its £1500, if i think about the price too much i shake

nimbs · 10/10/2009 20:40

seaglass - met a man the other day whilst walking our dog - he had 2 dogs, one a normal lab the other a schit-poo (his words not mine!!) I agree that these designer names for cross breeds are ridiculous - my sil swears that the cocker spaniel she was sold, which in fact resembles every springer spaniel i've ever seen - is a 'sprocker'

Babywhiting · 27/10/2009 12:01

i would really love a french bulldog but dp wont pay the £3000.00 for one ...lol

saintmaybe · 27/10/2009 12:12

Labradoodles should so have been called poobadors.

ilove · 27/10/2009 12:23

We have a Fauve de Bretagne - French Basset - he was £600 and is wonderful

ib · 27/10/2009 12:24

I paid 800 for our dog. Frankly, I thought it wasn't that much.

I got him from a very responsible breeder who will only do one litter a year for each bitch (she has two). The dogs are vaccinated, registered with the appropriate bodies, chipped and so on. I had plenty of opportunity while he was very young to go and meet the parents of the dog and the litter with my young ds, so he could get used to them and the puppy could get used to him.

The largest size litter these dogs will breed is 10 - usually around 7. So if she gets two litters of, say 8 puppies each, and sells all of them for 800, her total revenue will be less than 13,000 a year. Deduct vet fees and all other costs and I fail to see why anyone would do it for less.

I'm totally in favour of rescuing dogs where appropriate. But if people are going to buy them (and I believe there are sometimes valid reasons to) then they should be willing to pay enough to ensure the breeding can be done in a responsible and caring manner, and that the breeders can make a reasonable living from it without having to cut corners.
