Any cat owners around?

We are on a list to get a Ragdoll kitten in late Jan/ early February, which seems ages away but I know will come round quickly, so I'm trying to think a few things through now. My main question at the moment is where did your cat sleep when it was a kitten/young cat?

I'd planned to have the cat's bed in the kitchen (with a litter tray when it's tiny then with a cat flap in the door to the utility room where a second litter tray will have been kept). However, I don't really like the thought of it climbing all over the surfaces when we're asleep. I was considering a crate type of affair but then is that cruel to coop it up? So should I let it have the run of the house?

Obviously, cats are nocturnal so may be out all night but Ragdolls are house cats...I'm just wondering whether the cat will be rampaging playing around in the house for hours when we're all in bed or do they tend to sleep a lot at night as well?

Help!!

at three children and SIX cats. Need to show this to DH as it took plenty of persuasion to get him to agree to one cat with three children. The first thing he came out with when I suggested getting a kitten was, "Cats suck the breath out of babies' mouths," albeit in an ironic manner (MIL is lovely but rather old fashioned, can just imagine her coming with that old chestnut over the years).

Thanks for the advice re kittens and young dc; ours are 5, 3 and 15m so will follow what you have said.

Is wood pellet litter available in supermarkets, I've only ever noticed the conventional type.

Sorry to be a pain but you shouldn't be scooping cat poop into the loo. THe water systems we have are designed specifically to break down human deposits not animals so any cat/dog stuff does not get cleaned out properly.

If you are unsure of what can be flushed it is always worth a call to your sewerage company who will explain things happily.

DMNC - this thread is now back on track after last night's bizarre tangent .

Do you just scoop the poop into the bin?

LRC is a real pain... such a trouble causer

I scoop into nappy sacks (the cheap own brand scented ones) and put it into the outside bin each day. It doesn't seem to take that much effort really and doesn't smell at all because of the bags! You could use pet poop scoop bags which are black (ie you can't see the contents so much) but they tend not to be scented!

DMNC eats Greggs sausage rolls

LRC eats HOT DOGS [why isn't there a poking out tounge smiley?]

LittleRedCar · 09/10/2009 11:04
Hmm
BloodRedTulips · 09/10/2009 11:09

tesco do wood pellet stuff.

DMNC... we have a septic tank so poo is poo in our case, it gets degraded just the same.

I'd love to see the science behind what you've said about the water systems only breaking down human poo though, that doesn't fit with what i know about water treatment plants but would be happy to be proven wrong

i hate dumping too many plastic bags and our bins are only collected fortnightly so you can imagine what 2 weeks worth of poo from 6 cats would smell like [vom] so flushing is by far the best option here.

BT, dp isn't really a cat person tbh, but he's very tolerant of me occasionally turning up with strays i've found and tbh they generally prefer him to me the little sods!

DailyMailNameChanger · 09/10/2009 11:17

Aw come on LRC they have got to be worse than greggs haven't they?

Ok, what about, erm... caviar? That is pretty vile isn't it?

DailyMailNameChanger · 09/10/2009 11:21

Sorry tulips, didn't mean to ignore you...

Fair enough if you have a septic. Perhaps you know more than me about treatment plants, I am just going on what I was told by the water board as I have not made a study of them myself. I thought the water board were the people who were likely to know best TBH.
