what puppy?

I am toying with the idea of getting a puppy next spring/summer.

We had a newfoundland who died from a heart problem (we think) aged 9. He was lovely but boy did he make a lot of mess!

My DH would like a leonberger as our next dog (i can't have another slobbering dog) but I think that I would prefer a smaller dog that the children could eventually walk (they are currently 10, 8 and 5)

I don't like small dogs but there must be a mid sized dog that would be a good family pet.

I am looking for something that would be happy with 2 shortish (30 - 60 minutes) walks a day and is good around children and cats. We have a big garden so the puppy/dog would be able to play and run outside of the 2 walks.

Border collies would be ideal if they didn't need the amount of excersise that they need. I can't do 10 mile walks everyday!

Any suggestions?

That's quite gorge, actually.

I stick to my original assessment, though: pink collars and diamante leads = pugs.

LittleRedCar.

You would need some sort of anti-spill lid like the no-spill water bowls on it though wouldn't you?

Piffle, never met a Ridgeback I didn't like.

And what sane person would put a raincoat on a dog?

Stick to the spacesuit, I think

x post moose on the loose

Given the volume of spit involved, I think a drainage tube leading to a 60 gallon tank would be helpful, no?

DailyMailNameChanger · 11/10/2009 18:42

I wonder if someone will actually go on to develop something like this now - after all I am sure we have demonstrated a fair need...

EdgarAllenPoo · 11/10/2009 18:44

large greyhound? don't need much walking...very calm and like to sleep all day. so many in rescue you'd be saving a dogs life...

i love collies, but yes they like to 'herd' kids and can be snappy around overexcited kids.

moosemama · 11/10/2009 18:46

Mmm, maybe. However, am now thinking dog in a completely separate trailer complete with drainage wholes might be the best option. (My border collie/belgian shepherd dribbles in the car as well. She also whines like a good'un, although at least she grew out of throwing up every time we went out. She drives me up the wall on long journeys, poor thing - its not her fault.)

I really should apologise to Madusa for hijacking her thread with my silly drool designing antics. I am not well and tucked up on the sofa with far too much time on my hands this weekend. Sorry!

Standard poodle lovely dogs, dont shed, if you keep them in a nice short clip they dont look daft. Ive met a couple and their personalities seemed very similar to the lab. Playful, friendly and a bit goofy.

LittleRedCar · 11/10/2009 18:50

Yes, I agree re apologies. Madusa.

Some dogs are, however, beyond help:

here

DailyMailNameChanger · 11/10/2009 18:59

Yes, sorry Madusa - on the plus side she may well have use for our invention if she goes with one of those dogs - perhaps we should offer to let her be one of the trial subjects to make up for it?

Sorry... sorry Madusa, getting carried away again

EdgarAllenPoo · 11/10/2009 21:22

as spugs says...standard poodles are lovely, very clever and some have slightly sharp temperaments - if your kids like to run riot the poodle will usually join in! a good choice for an experienced dog owner.

i don't think the clips are daft..they do take getting used to....get close and its like hugging a supersoft wookie. lovely.

schnauzer is another dog that sheds mostly into coat...never met one, but have heard good things.

madusa · 12/10/2009 19:36

i'm not a poodle person and despite the great dribble protection on offer here, I don't think i will get another slobber dog either,

Still an estrela or goldie I think

Hi madusa, apologies again for the daft hijack.

Do come back and tell us what you go for in the end, I would love to hear. [nosey Moose emoticon]

Goober · 12/10/2009 20:30

Boxer.

See my profile pic and tell me you don't luurrrve her.

moosemama · 12/10/2009 20:34

Oh Goober, she's lovely. I miss my boxer/gsd mix he was fantastic.

Again with the slobber though?

Goober · 12/10/2009 22:00

She only slobbers when she gets hot and it is only a problem if she shakes her head, I stand well back!! Gladly she is happiest outside when it is hot so she does all her spitting out there. She is a very clean lady, doesn't molt much and sleeps alot. Always pleased to see me when I get home from work. Great with kids, large and small.
