what puppy?

I am toying with the idea of getting a puppy next spring/summer.

We had a newfoundland who died from a heart problem (we think) aged 9. He was lovely but boy did he make a lot of mess!

My DH would like a leonberger as our next dog (i can't have another slobbering dog) but I think that I would prefer a smaller dog that the children could eventually walk (they are currently 10, 8 and 5)

I don't like small dogs but there must be a mid sized dog that would be a good family pet.

I am looking for something that would be happy with 2 shortish (30 - 60 minutes) walks a day and is good around children and cats. We have a big garden so the puppy/dog would be able to play and run outside of the 2 walks.

Border collies would be ideal if they didn't need the amount of excersise that they need. I can't do 10 mile walks everyday!

Any suggestions?

Given the volume of spit involved, I think a drainage tube leading to a 60 gallon tank would be helpful, no?

I wonder if someone will actually go on to develop something like this now - after all I am sure we have demonstrated a fair need...

large greyhound? don't need much walking...very calm and like to sleep all day. so many in rescue you'd be saving a dogs life...

i love collies, but yes they like to 'herd' kids and can be snappy around overexcited kids.

Mmm, maybe. However, am now thinking dog in a completely separate trailer complete with drainage wholes might be the best option. (My border collie/belgian shepherd dribbles in the car as well. She also whines like a good'un, although at least she grew out of throwing up every time we went out. She drives me up the wall on long journeys, poor thing - its not her fault.)

Standard poodle lovely dogs, dont shed, if you keep them in a nice short clip they dont look daft. Ive met a couple and their personalities seemed very similar to the lab. Playful, friendly and a bit goofy.

Yes, sorry Madusa - on the plus side she may well have use for our invention if she goes with one of those dogs - perhaps we should offer to let her be one of the trial subjects to make up for it?

as spugs says...standard poodles are lovely, very clever and some have slightly sharp temperaments - if your kids like to run riot the poodle will usually join in! a good choice for an experienced dog owner.

i don't think the clips are daft..they do take getting used to....get close and its like hugging a supersoft wookie. lovely.

schnauzer is another dog that sheds mostly into coat...never met one, but have heard good things.

i'm not a poodle person and despite the great dribble protection on offer here, I don't think i will get another slobber dog either,

She only slobbers when she gets hot and it is only a problem if she shakes her head, I stand well back!! Gladly she is happiest outside when it is hot so she does all her spitting out there. She is a very clean lady, doesn't molt much and sleeps alot. Always pleased to see me when I get home from work. Great with kids, large and small.
