I'm really worried about my cat's sudden illness

Don't know if anyone can help, or if anyone can put my mind at rest?

I took her to the vets yesterday morning, and theupshot of that is that she is now on antibiotics, and she also had a pain relieving jab/plus and antibiotic jab.

The vets doesn't know what's wrong tho. I told the vet that when i had picked her up she cried out, that she seemed to have pain when beinding to eat her food yesterday morning. On examination the vet found noproblems with her respiratory nor any obvious bites, or sites of pain. It's really odd.
I am taking her back tomorrow.

It started on thursday, she just seemed not right. She slept and slept. She did eat a bit. She's wide eyed, scared, slow and like she's totally spaced out.

Normally she's joyful, slinky and vocal, she is a lovely 1 yr old tortie.

I had to give her a tablet earlier, and now she is absolutely terrified, and won't come anywhere near me. I know it's sort of understandable, but i've givenher worming tablets inthe past and she's not acted like this.

it's almost like she has had some sort of trauma, and I am really upset for her.

scroob...I don't know what to say...just looking at those lovely pictures is making me blub. What an absolutely beautiful and stunning looking cat. Wow. You would never have known she was ill would you. It is absolutely no wonder you are as heartbroken as you are and the photo of your DD with her says it all - no wonder too she is so upset.

I'm glad we're in touch with emails now...keep in touch....I have replied again this morning xxxxxx

scroobiuspirate · 09/10/2009 11:15

Well done you for doing that. Very brave thing to do, imo. xxx

Pixie had wonderful owners in both you and your DD and you can be proud that she had a good life with you.

I even now all these years later feel somewhat sad when I see a jet black cat because it reminds me of Susie who was our family cat with her sweet nature and a purr like a motorboat. To me in particular she was a dear companion and friend. She died of kidney failure.

thankyou atilla.

there is something so amazing about a cat who is special to you. they are such choosy buggers, that when you have one so sweet, it makes you feel loved.

GOOD LUCK scroob with your other cat....please let us know outcome...xxxx

scroobiuspirate · 12/10/2009 11:06

hi

Jasmin's test will be sent off to a lab in Scotland, so i won't know until the end of the week.

if it's positive, i believe they then do a second test on it, ie grow it in the lab or something, and this takes a few weeks.

if that part is positive, ie it's taken hold then we have decisions to make. She may test neg tho, and it may be there but not apparent yet, so she will need another test in 6 weeks.

xx thanks

Good look with Jasmin.

piratecatagain · 15/10/2009 11:46

Update

Jasmin is negative. She will be retested in 6 weeks time. So after that we can think about another cat, maybe.

Vet today reckons Pixie got infected when she was being a stray.

She said it's unlikely she got it from her mother, as most felv + cats rarely have kittens. They usually abort. I'll never know.

more fingers crossed for the retest.

englishpatient · 15/10/2009 13:47

Glad to hear your bit of good news - hope the retest will be negative too.

This week we are feeding our neighbours' two young cats. They are gorgeous and it is making me very keen to get some more cats. Do you think getting more than 2 kittens would be crazy?! I have been thinking about this and love the idea. (Not sure DH will agree anyway!)

piratecatagain · 15/10/2009 17:13

um, i think 2 would be enough for me!

I have thought about the whole thing, and for the time being becuase of jasmin's results will be trying to avoid getting any cat, till i know she has the all clear.

if i get another kitten i will be terrified it has this felv. I might not even get another, as would need, a really friendly one for dd. Nothing will come up to Pixie, unless i see another older cat who is def really friendly.

i am actually considering a puppy, as I know Jasmin prefers dogs to cats anyway!!

How are you doing now english patient?

englishpatient · 17/10/2009 20:26

Thanks for asking about me - I see you've got a new name!

I can understand how your worries about felv now affect your decisions about getting another cat. It's a good thing to take your time about any decision until you feel really sure.

Dogs are so different from cats though! (We have a border terrier - she's lovely, very affectionate, but just different, not less wonderful, but not a substitute for a cat, for me.)

I know what you mean about no cat being as good for you as Pixie, I feel the same about mine. But I love to have cats around and will really adore them, I just hope they will love us back!

piratecat · 18/10/2009 12:06

hiya, yes p cat was my original name here.!

yes dogs are so different. have been lucky to have some great doggy companions growing up.

Pixie was so 'dog like' tho. I was looking for a dog , when i met her in the animal rescue place, and i just couldn't get her out of my mind. She was mad, and freindly, like a dog.

Time will tell.

Pixies ashed are ready, so need to deal with that 2morro.

x

englishpatient · 18/10/2009 15:54

Hope you will feel okay when you collect the ashes - good luck.

englishpatient · 19/10/2009 10:28

How are you today, piratecat?

gagamama · 19/10/2009 15:10

Oh, what a beautiful creature! Your DD looks pretty wonderful, too... what a smile. No wonder you loved Pixie so much if that is the effect she had on your lovely little girl.

I hope Jasmin is ok when she is re-tested in 6 weeks. Do you know the owners of the other cat Pixie used to play with in your garden? They might want to have her tested too if they used to play together a lot.

I would definitely recommend a dog. I lost several cats before settling on a dog, and haven't ever looked back! Hope you and DD are feeling more positive.

piratecat · 19/10/2009 16:51

hi, thankyou for your lovely message there!

so kind.

englishpatient, thankyou for asking. I rang the vets, and nearly keeled over at the bill. I can't go and get Pixie's ashes till i have some money really.

aristoBLACKcat · 19/10/2009 19:32

good news that jasmin is ok

loving your name......

best wishes when you collect pixie
