Anyone know anything about Miniature Schnauzers?

We've been thinking seriously about getting a dog for a while and had decided on a miniature schnauzer. This was until I spoke to someone yesterday whose mother has one and said that the dog was a nightmare and really yappy. Are they all like this? I don't think either I or the neighbours could cope with a dog who barks constantly. Any thoughts?

A friend of mine has some. I'm not a doggy person but I really like them -- they are a small dog with a big personality iykwim. I don't think they are any more prone to yappiness than any other dog.

A bit from the breed club of The Miniature Schnauzer

They are alert, energetic, and intelligent. They are good-natured, affectionate, and obedient, and they get along well with children. This breed will demand a substantial amount of time and companionship from its owner. They can be somewhat aggressive towards other dogs, and they enjoy putting on a show for an audience. They should be properly trained and socialized from an early age to ensure a stable temperament. They tend to bark a lot and they make good watch dogs. They can sometimes be reserved in the company of strangers.
The word "schauzen" means to snap vocally or to give lip or talk back.

Oooh, I bought the boxed set of Spaced recently (DH had never heard of it ) and I've almost decided that when we move back to Ireland we will get one of those. I like intelligent, doggy dogs with lots of go in them, not floppy, lazy things.

We won't be calling him Colin though as DS has had a name in mind for over a year now. The dog will be called Catkins. I'll probably buy one of those high-pitched dog whistles so I don't have to call him by name in the park.

Our neighbour has one. It is stupid, nervy and yaps non-bloody-stop. It is horrible. Sorry!

My stepmother has one and he does bark one hell of a lot. Very very excitable. If you see him sitting quietly then it's worthy of comment. But sweet natured - and this is coming from someone who doesn't really like dogs.

I have a customer with an elderly one. Apparently he is always ready to go for a walk, but doesn't look for attention if he isn't being taken out. He is very friendly, the dog, not his owner who is also pleasant! I think it is hard to base individual dog decisions on what you know of a couple of examples, though. Do you know a local breeder or owner?

We're getting one in two weeks

When we went to see the breeder we met his four/five adult dogs (various ages, all bitches) None of them were yappy at all, even when they were shut out when we first arrived. They had a four month old puppy who wasn't yappy either. One of them barked once but was provoked by DS roaring like a lion at her

They are good watch dogs, so will bark a bit, but the breeder said they won't yap if you train/socialise them well. They stressed that you must start as you mean to go on, show them who's boss etc.

I'll let you know...

(reckon I'll need to do some training on DS too)
