Does anyone else find that Frontline is useless?

Bloody cat has fleas. We've been using Frontline but its obviously having no effect whatsoever.

The only other thing our vets sell is Stronghold (flea treatment combined with a worming treatment-does anyone have any experience of it? Does it work?

Meanwhile I'm trying the constant hoovering to stop it from becoming a big problem

Quick google. Fronline Spot On is sold anywhere, combo is prescription strength so only sold through vets.

So don't bother with spot on.

madusa · 22/09/2009 12:17

we use Stronghold on our furry animals and have never had a problem with fleas

i also use panacur wormer to get the worms that stronghold doesn't get

omg I was gona start the same thread! Have infestation with 2 cats, frontline every 4 weeks and have sprayed the house 3 times over this summer and says it should last 6 months! Have had them for 5 years and this is 1st time they've got them, and they won't leave! Even my lo's are getting bitten - is horrible. Think will give stronghold a try. Was also hunting in Pets At Home yesterday and they sell flea bombs - bit scared to use those with a baby and toddler in the house though tbh.

the chart at the bottom of this link is useful

here is frontline combo on a website. vets would say that.

combo

Jumente · 22/09/2009 13:41

Yy if you want them gone right away then spray, and you can get a safe one apparently that is silicon and just coats the eggs...ask vet though as is about 25 quid iirc.

We went the easy way and just used program combined with what we had left of frontline/combo (also tried and failed on its own)

Pretty much stopped seeing flea eggs/dirt as soon as started using the program, it took a couple of months before she wasn't coming up with any at all on the comb...

it works in the end, and I have a messy house so spraying would have been tricky - plus toddler of course.

Your poor DS Riven

Luckily none of us seem to get bitten, ever. Do fleas only bite certain people?

Well I went to the vets earlier and bought 3 months supply of Stronghold and a house spray and I am now poorer to the sum of £45 (although that did include a repeat prescription of her thyroid tablets as well)

Stronghold £22 from vet; Frontline £31 from Pets At Home. No contest!

PinkyMinxy · 23/09/2009 09:19

I bought ours from the vet clinic at Pets at Home, rather than the shop floor, as our vets are open at funny times, Pets at Home is more convenient.

I have to agree that here in the states also, frontline is completely useless. I have 3 cats and a ferret. We bathed and subsequently picked off 45 fleas from the ferret today. Vaseline immobilizes them and then you can use a tweezers to get them. I dispose of them on a piece of scotch tape. I have spent all day vacuuming every square inch of my messy home today, stripped the bed vacuumed the outside mat and am now headed for the store for some kind of spray to kill the rest. I also vacuumed the curtains. I use the H20 vac so everything goes down the drain, solids to the trash. I just put it on them 10 days ago and watch as they lick it off of each other. We also frontlined the ferret 10 days ago. 45 fleas! It's a wonder he's not dead.

Frontline Combo is only available with a prescription and is much stronger than Frontline Spot On. I used the Spot On version until last year when I realised that the fleas had become immune. Have used Frontline Combo this year without any problem. If you try to by the Combo version online you generally get asked for a prescription at checkout.

Buy not 'by'. Blush

Advocate is supposed to be the best as it stays in the system for longer than the life cycle of the flea. So not only kills the adults, but the subsequently-hatching eggs as well. If your vet doesn't sell it, they can still prescribe it. My cat is flea allergic and it's the only thing the vet will recommend for use on him (though I know he might be on commission - the explanation made sense to me!)

There are two different frontlines, one is frontline (available from vets, pharmacies, pet shops if qualified) the other is frontline combo which is only available from the vets. Frontline combo treats the external environment also. There is no difference to frontline from internet or shops.

With any flea treatment you need to keep to strict timelines, nothing over 4 weeks to treat otherwise the fleas may get a hold. Make sure you put it on two spots on the back of the neck and use the whole pipette, do not rub it in, do not let the cat go out for two hours after it has had it and if you have more than one cat/animal keep them apart for two hours whilst it spreads. If you are using frontline do not use any other products such as flea collars/other spot ons as the active ingredients in frontline will counteract the active ingredient in frontline.

You definately need to treat your house, fleas and eggs can live in the house for years, also think about treating your car if the cat went in it to the vets. Get a decent spray for the house, foggers and bombs only reach what the eye can see sprays can be directed where they need to be. Hoovering is the best thing you can so as the vibrations force the eggs to hatch, remember to treat the whole house, fleas can travel to rooms the animal doesn't go in by you.

Bear in mind the way frontline works is that fleas are attracted back onto the animal to die therefore you may still see fleas on the animal after treatment.

IMO in regards to worms (different poster) you need to treat for roundworms and tapeworms as a minimum, especially as tapeworms can be transferred by fleas, heartworm is not enough.

I have two cats and for nearly seven years I have always treated them with the Frontline spray and have never had a problem. Recently I found an adult flea on one of my cats so went to the vets. At the vets I was advised to purchase Frontline Combo instead of the spray. Within two days after the first administration and after spraying my entire home I was still finding adult fleas. After a week I telephoned the vets for advise and was told that I can use a second dose, two weeks after the first application. I used another pipette on each of my cats but it still hasn't worked. They're infested with baby fleas.

Does anyone have a recommendation for sprays? I've treated the (indoor only) cats but I just saw a flea on the carpet. I have a 9 mo who is crawling so I need something that won't make him sick. Thanks!
