Is leaving the cat at home alone for 3 days okay? (neighbour popping in daily)

My MIL is getting married at the weekend and we are travelling up north on Thursday morning and coming back Sunday afternoon.

I have only left the cat once before and we put her in a cattery for 5 days. She seemed okay with this but there are no places for her this time. DH thinks she will be fine at home, a ton of dry food down and a clean litter tray. One of our enighbours is coming round daily to check her fresh water is topped up, scoop any nasties out of the tray and put a fresh puch down. I don't want to ask them to do it more than once a day as they have just had a baby on Friday.

We don't have a cat flap so she will have to remain indoors when she is normally such an outdoors cat. I am going to leave the radio on as background noise and we have timers on the lights etc. Do you think this will be okay?

Yes. Have done this for a week before now. They are more attached to places than people IME.

We've got two of these for our cats. They're brilliant. I don't trust our greedy little beggars not to gorge themselves and then not eat for two days otherwise. We got ours from Pets at Home.

I think I'll run it by them to see if they can some twice a day. They had a baby boy last Friday so didn't want to put on them too much but its only a few days so see if I can sweet talk him! Thanks again.

Your cat wıll be fıne.We lock the catflap when we go away and neıghbour pops ın to top up food and scoop lıtter-I pay her a nomınal amount. If ıt ıs more than 5 days I use a cattery.I have 2 cats atm but have done thıs wıth 1 and they truly dont seem to mınd at all.I do leave 2 trays as they can come over all fastıdıous.

We leave ours for up to a week. We make a little den in the garage (DP made a hole in the back garage door for him to get in and out) and the neighbours put a can of food out for him once a day. He doesn't seem to mind too much and I think he'd prefer this arrangement to a cattery.

GumtreeGirl · 25/08/2009 18:34

It'll be fine. Ours hates catteries too - too many strange smells from other anxious moggies. He gets our neighbour popping in, and she spoils him a bit, so he gets a holiday too.

You could leave a radio on so he gets a bit of noise if that's what he's used to? Ours quite likes the Now Show on Radio 4 .

Slight word of warning to the suggestion by feralgirl - a friend of a friend had one of these which broke halfway through the holiday, and she came back to a very hungry cat. Not saying they're all rubbish, just something to bear in mind!

It'll be fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

Will enjoy the empty house.

Make sure your flea treatment is up to date before you go though. I remember as a kid one of the cats picked up fleas whilst we were away and then spent the week sleeping on a mattress.... mattress was binned.

I second everyone that says your cat will be fine! Probably much prefer home to a catterie anyway.

We keep ours in when we are away to save anyone who is popping in, the trouble of trying to get them back in before they leave.
They are always fine and we have had to leave them for up to 10 days with out going out.
I would worry more if I knew they were going out while I wasn't around to see them come home safe!

chichichien · 25/08/2009 19:18

I subject our cat to this for up to a week.

She's a cat. I don't care that much.

Rumpel · 25/08/2009 19:30

I've gone away and left my 3 cats for almost 3 weeks before. As long as your neighbour checks puss'll be fine. I have to say I invested in one of these:

www.sureflap.co.uk

and it is well worth the pennies. My eldest was being bullied and other cats coming in house. Enjoy your trip away and don't worry about puss.

oxocube · 25/08/2009 19:34

She'll be absolutely fine. Cats are very adaptable - its what I love about them. She'll probably sleep most of the time. If there is reincarnation, I really want to come back as a cat

oxocube · 25/08/2009 19:37

"I subject our cat to this for up to a week.

She's a cat. I don't care that much."

that's reassuring chichichien

chichichien · 25/08/2009 19:44

oh don't take the hump. Our cat is fine for a week. A cat is happier at home than in a cattery

oxocube · 25/08/2009 19:49

Actually, I agree chichi. Mine hate the cattery. But I do care about my pets very much (too much probably )

chichichien · 25/08/2009 22:12

maybe I sounded heartless. If so, only because I am embarrassed to be in love with my cat

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/08/2009 10:22

i am cat sitting fo a friend (im also allergic to cats )

i go in twice a day, let her out in morning and then shes out all day(has a shed she can go into if she she wants) and then i go back about 7pm and she comes when calls and is locked in for the night

as long as has fresh food/water then should be fine

any chnace neighbour can go in twice so can be let out?
