have fleas in my house. im trying to get rid of them and have spent a fortune already. my 2 cats that i have had 6 days are covered in fleas and although they are now being quarentined in the kitchen, their fleas and eggs are prob still being transported around the house. my other cat is living outside at the moment so i dont need to worry about her but these new ones would prob get lost if they went outside as they dont know the area

my son has so many bites now and when he is being biten they are now coming up as great big red spots as opposed to the little dots he was getting at first. i think he is beginning to react to them and im worried he will start to develop more symptoms if he carries on being biten

i dont want to get rid of my new cats as they have already come from one awful home, but i feel that by keeping them i may beputting my son's health at risk.

what do you think i should do?

we looked into an exterminator before we tried indorex and we were quoted £70 for a 3bed bungalow.

Never used Indorex. Used Acclaim several times (last time as last ditch attempt to evict a plague of bluebottles feeding on a dead bird in our inaccessible chimney) - it has worked well every time

juicychops · 22/08/2009 22:18

yuck did you have to leave the dead bird there?

We had an infestation a while ago. Frontlined the cats (bought from our vet) and got a household spray from Pets at Home. It was one of the more expensive ones at around 15 pounds but it said on the can it lasted for 12 months. Can't remember the name, sorry. It worked at treat within 24 hours all the little buggers were dead. Sadly it also killed every other bug in the house and I was hoovering up spiders for weeks.

Acclaim and Indorex both very good, talk to your vet and see which they sell and get that one! The difference in these sprays vs the cheaper supermarket types is that these have prolonged action for preventing hatching of the eggs. The killing power in any spray is limited to certain life stages of the flea (think butterfly like life cycle) - the eggs do not die with the household spray killing agents, but will hatch out fairly quickly unless prevented from doing so. Acclaim and Indorex both have a flea hormone in it that stops the life cycle from being completed, so any eggs that hatch will ultimately not make it to becoming fleas that bite or re-infest. This is why you have to have a decent spray to control the environmental population.

Had similar problem myself a few years ago. Fleas everywhere. Bought a big spray can of something can't remember name from local vets for about £13. It wasn't Acclaim or Indorex, but still good. Worked a treat. No fleas (or spiders) for months.

Use frontline every 4 weeks to keep fleas away (outdoor cats may bring them in from the grass or their feline friends)
Once fleas are completely under control, flea collars may be enough. If not, you'll have to go back to not as cheap frontline.

Hope you all stop itching soon!

at last i have started beushing out DEAD fleas from the cat's fur. gunna still keep them quarentined until the stuff i order tomorrow arrives and ive treated the whole house until all fleas and eggs are gone.

i know its not fair on the cats but im sure they will live with a few more days shut up together. been brushing their fur with a brush dipped in water and baby shampoo which seems to be making their coats a bit nicer

I flea bombed my house again yesterday, only the pet shop had run low on flea bombs, so I also bought flea foggers, thinking I could just use them at the same time, only they are highly flamable, so I could have blown the house up using them while the flea bombs smouldered away, so I had to do it in two stages. I also bgought some more treatment for the cat...only she seems to have disappeared, I hope I see her soon, I am starting to get worried. :s

juicychops · 24/08/2009 12:55

oh no when was the last time you saw her? she's prob just got the hump with the smell of all the chemicals or somethin

Yeah maybe, I hope. She followed us down the road when we went to the park on Saturday morning and I haven't seen her since. Went for a walk around calling her today but no luck.
On a more positive note, no fleas seen today, the 'foggers' and 'bombs' have hopefully done the trick!

juicychops · 24/08/2009 20:30

im sure she is fine. glad the foggers have worked. i hope my stuff arrives soon. was rejoycing at the fact ds had no new flea bites on him this morning, but tonight found some that i hadn't noticed so they are still living in his room
