God i am crap at this puppy malarkey already

I have taken her out after she wakes up/after playing and after her food etc. She sits and looks at me then wees on the floor when we come in. What am i doing wrong???

Put her collar on last night and she is ok with it but obv doesn't want to walk on the lead. How do i teach her to walk on the lead?

I so want to be be a good owner and make her a happy puppy. I know it's early days and all that but i feel like a numpty. I read all the books and don't actually have a clue it seems

Another little question for you ladies if you don't mind?

Having read different books/responses what do i do when she is cying/barking at 3.45am? 1st night she was here i ignored her and she went back to sleep after 20 mins but tonight she didn't stop so she's sat here on my knee all snuggled into me,which is all very nice (am on hols this week) but back to work next week and i'm gonna be knackered if i am up from 4am every day lol.

I have had her out to the garden from 3.45am till 4.15am and she jumped up the step to get inside so i'm guessing she didn't need to go. The puppy pad was wet tho.

Any replies will be useful for tonight xxx

If she has reign of the kitchen with puppy pads down and she doesn't need to go out then ignore her or she will do it every night!

Over night with both of mine I give them the run of the kitchen/bathroom. They have a bed and a puppy pad in the corner and I leave them to it. If they bark I ignore them. Once they start to get the hang of house training they start to hold it or use the doggy door (thats what Alfie does now).

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 08:01

Oh god i am bloody useless at this Just let her lie on the sofa on my chest till half an hour ago

Yes i have puppy pads down. So i have to ignore her even if she really really cries?? What if she does it all night? I felt so sorry for her being all alone.

God i will have to get earplugs then won't i ?

Hi we had our puppy last summer so she is now 14 months old (golden Lab). She did the whole crying all night for a while. It took her about a week to settle in but we found that a soft toy worked wonders (make sure it doesn't have beady eyes though) and made her settle better.

We shut her in the kitchen with a child gate so that she could see further than she could get. She used to pee/poo on the newspaper in the kitchen as that was what she was used to where she was born.

As she got a little older she went from crying a lot at night to crying when she wanted the loo and wouldn't go on the paper anymore so I had to come and let her out in the garden - I guess that lasted until she was about 5 months old then she started going longer over night until one mornign I woke up and fretted as I hadn't been to let her out at 2am!

As for walking I would recommend a harness any day of the week as they don't choke the pup and you have more control over their body - esp while they are little. Tasha still has a harness and they also do a bit to fit them to the seatbelt in the car which is great as she can't clamber all over the place.

Tasha did get car sick but we put a blanket and towels in the car and kept going at it and she is now fine and loves going out in the car.

Hope all of this helps

A Gal - I so remember the crying! It's heart-rending. It is hard to ignore - and there were more than a few times I didn't manage to ignore my lab puppy.

Do you have a crate for your pup at night? It really helps them to have somewhere safe to be, in theory it speeds up house training (didn't with mine - she just weed in her bed!) and it gave me very valuable peace of mind. I knew that there was no way she could hurt herself while she was in there, so I could rest a little easier when she cried.

I'm with Bella on the rest of it though - relax and enjoy your puppy. She's too young to do much more than get used to you and learn her name.

If you want to take her out, carry her everywhere. Don't put her down in public until after the jabs are fully complete. Going out and about carrying a pup is a good way to start socialising - but you have to be gentle with how long you stimulate her for. Over stimulation will do her no favours.

Enjoy your lovely puppy; it'll be hard work and sleepless but it passes so fast.

Morning

It's like having a new baby, isn't it?

Spugs' advice is good. Expect a few sleepless nights and then she should sleep through - or at least until 5.30 like my 13 week old pup does

Do try though, not to let her fall asleep on your lap. If you want her to sleep in the kitchen then you have to stick to your guns really. Out for a wee and then straight back in and leave her. Some people keep the crate in their bedroom but of course then you need to get up.

newpup · 10/08/2009 08:32

Hi Bella (waves)

Just realised it is a year since I used to be getting up at 5.30am and posting on here to you about Dawson's creek

I have a job to turf her out of the crate now at 9am on a Sunday and after a quick wee she goes back for a lie in - lazy beast!!!

She is snoring away in the cat bed as I type!

How time flies- hope your boy and dobe are okay?

bella21 · 10/08/2009 08:36

I know - a whole year...

Yet my life has changed so little - still up at 5.30 am Staying away from Dawson's Creek though - I creep back into bed at 6 for another hour before dd comes bouncing through.

Must you brag about getting up at 9am on a Sunday? I don't think I have ever done that - ever

My boy's fab, thanks, and plays all day with the newbie. My old girl looks on disdainfully while the pup tries desperately to get her attention.

I bet your girl's lovely now.

newpup · 10/08/2009 08:46

Sorry Won't tell you we slept in until 9.30 yesterday!!!

My girl is fab. She is a real gem. Really well behaved and such a softy. Finally she now barks when DH comes home and she hears the door open. Also gives the odd bark if she hears a noise at night.

She gets some sore skin under her leg though and it got a bit infected. The vet gave her some antibiotics which sorted it out but I can see it looking a bit sore again. Any ideas? It is excema apparently!

She is a bit of a wimp though - totally petrified of a mouse the cat brought in! Cowered in the corner and hid until I rescued her.

Glad you are enjoying yours - forgot about your old girl, sorry.

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 08:51

Thanks girls

Yes just like a new baby lol. I haven't stopped fretting since we brought her home!!

Earplugs it is then My MIL brought a soft toy for her so will put that in with her tonight.

I am so terrified of doing the wrong things lol. I will be asking you all loads of daft questions over the next few weeks!!

bluesnowfalcon · 10/08/2009 09:11

Well it does get easier and now at 14 months Tasha is lying next to me while I type and loves being around! She walks well and only barks at people she doesn't know or if they let themselves in the front door!

Good luck with the sleepless nights and enjoy pup to the full

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 09:27

Have a vet appointment today at 3pm with an appointment with the vet nurse/qualified behaviourist at 3.30pm for a chat.

They will let me come along to the puppy socialisation from tomorrow night so feeling much happier today!!

I will try very hard to chill a bit and stop worrying so much. She is really lovely and has settled well, really happy with the dd's etc so i am not complaining.

Stayingsunnygirl · 10/08/2009 09:33

Can we be new puppy pals please aGal - like bella and newpup were? [hopeful smile emoticon]

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 10:13

Sunny yes that would be great!!!

We will look back here in a few months ane i will be wondering what the panic was all about

We met at the Edinburgh Xmas meet up didn't we? Don't think we were sat near each other tho iirc?

OP posts:
Stayingsunnygirl · 10/08/2009 10:21

Yes, you're right - we did meet at the Edinburgh christmas do - I got rather confused with real names and mumsnet names and so forgot most of them - so sorry.

The thing that's worrying me most at the moment is teaching the puppy her manners - she's still at the jumping up stage and gets very over excited when she meets people, and I want to have a dog who behaves well and doesn't upset others. She's also chewing everything she can get her paws on - furniture, feet, shoes, wellies - even books (she's got eclectic taste though - so far she's consumed a Geoffrey Jenkins and a Terry Pratchett!!

We'll be starting puppy classes soon (as soon as I can organise it) - and to be honest I think they'll be as much for me as the new puppy. Perhaps I'll get a treat if I get things right! [looks hopeful]

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 10:32

God don't be sorry lol, when we meet next time we will have to sit together and chat about my Molly and ?? what's yours called?

She went after dd1's feet this morning and was generaly tearing around. Am trying to get the dd's to be firm and make her stop and not squeal and run away from her. Told them they are pack leaders and the bosses etc.

There is nothing like a cuddly puppy is there?

OP posts:
Stayingsunnygirl · 10/08/2009 10:37

Mine's called Coco, and she's currently asleep under the desk, snoring - clearly worn out from all the chewing and tearing around.

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 11:00

Hmm Molly is not asleep in the lovely bed i bought for her but in a huge pile of dirty holiday washing

Oh well never mind. Off to get dd1's school shoes so catch up later

OP posts:
bluesnowfalcon · 10/08/2009 12:05

For chewing try rawhide chews or carrots!

Stayingsunnygirl · 10/08/2009 12:20

I've given her a carrot, bluesnowfalcon, and she seems to like it - thanks! WRT rawhide chews, do I have to get ones specifically for puppies, or will any sort do?

bluesnowfalcon · 10/08/2009 12:46

Think we bought puppy ones from Asda which did state puppy on the pack. Just need to make sure you are there when she's chewing just in case she takes a lump off and swallows to much - if this happens she'll cough it up (Tasha always does).

Have a look at this website it has some good views

The other thing you could do is to get a KKing Knog(rubber chew toy) from a pet shop and stuff this with treats. Tasha loves this and we have more recently got her one of those dog tugging ropes which she chews on. She only chewed one book and a cushion as a pup and nothing since.

spugs · 10/08/2009 13:24

For the jumping up thing just ignore them, dont make a fuss of them till they've calmed down. I make people do it when they meet my dog outside as well. Though they dont always take any notice but it cant help to ask them to not pet your dog till it stops jumping up.

aGalChangedHerName · 10/08/2009 20:58

So Molly and i survived the 2nd jab today. She was very brave (braver than me lol)

She has been asleep pretty much from 5pm (jab given at 3.30pm) and has eaten only a couple of mouthfuls of dinner. Should i be worrie? Vet did say she might be a bit sleepy but...?

Have earplugs ready for tonight. Vet nurse said unless she is unwell etc to ignore her. Maybe leave the plugs out tonight since she had her jab today?

OP posts:
bluesnowfalcon · 11/08/2009 07:10

How did last night go any more sleep than before?

Tasha usually sleeps well after a jab and seems to be a bit quieter for a day or so after as well.

aGalChangedHerName · 11/08/2009 07:16

Morning

Not much more sleep I heard her off and on through the night cos the earplugs kept falling out lol. I also kept waking up to see if she was crying Plonker that i am.

But she is very lively this morning so she must have got more sleep too than the night before. Jab not affecting her as much as yesterday. I thought she could go out after 1 week but vet said keep her in for 2 weeks. What a pita!!

She has weed on the puppy pads no problem but will not poo on them. Any reason why she's doing that?
