HELP! 8 Week Old Puppy Growling at DD

spugs · 07/08/2009 14:02

Puppy is an 8 week old papillon puppy (bitch) who we've had for a week. Shes been fine, great with 3 dds aged 8,3 and 16 months. Fine with the other dog though very growly when he jumps on her if she doesn't want to play.

Yesterday and today she has growled at DD aged 16 months. It wasn't a playful growl it was a get away now growl.

Both times shes been sleepy, the first time she was sat on my knee. DD was stroking her gently and talking to her (babbling) the dog growled at her. I told her no and put her on the floor. Since then I've encouraged DD to stroke her gently and give her treats (so she associates her with nice stuff).

Today we'd been to beach and pup was sitting on DD's knee in the push chair. Facing me so I could see what was going on. DD was not squishing her or anything, pup was tired and snuggling up to her and then growled at her again! She has ridden in the push chair before with no problems.

There is no physical reason for the growling as I've had her to the vets to be checked today.
She is fine with my other 2 dds who pick her up only when necessary to put her in her crate/car etc. I don't let them carry her about), and spend time playing with her etc. Apart from these 2 occasions she has been fine with my youngest. Who also plays with her though isn't allowed to pick her up.

My children are always supervised with my dogs and are very gentle. So why is she growling? I wondered if its because shes tired and doesn't like the sound of dd babbling? My other 2 dds have stroked her etc when shes been tired and she has not growled at them!

Any ideas gratefully received! I don't want this to get any worse or continue!

pmsl@knickers and knockers

but were they freshly washed or used

and know what you mean, i was an innocent blonde till i met bella on pets - she ledt me astray!!!

Bella21 · 07/08/2009 18:02

Oi!!!!

My dobe pup likes (used) underwear.

My last dobe liked them too.

I think it should be listed in all the books under breed characteristics:

Loyal, intelligent, good guard dog, eats knickers

We got our golden retriever when dd was 3. I had a few weeks of a behaviourist as he was the first big dog I ever owned.
When he was about 10/11 weeks behaviourist felt that he was seeing the pack thus: Me, dh, ds, dog, dd. The behaviourist was adamant that it needed dealing with.
So for an entire weekend, every time the dog went near dd I had to growl or make a 'rerrrr' noise to prove that she was 'under my protection'. By the end of the weekend, the dog responded to dd's commands first time and still does. Why last night dd (now nearly 8) dropped her pepperoni pizza under the table about an inch from the dog's nose. He wouldn't touch it (well, until she told him he could).
Having told you that to stress the importance of all humans being above the dog in the pack, can I stress how important it is to give any dog a 'get-out', a safe place where they can retreat to. And never leave them unsupervised. And never let a small child pull at a dog. You may need to do the growling thing with the 16 month old for a while .

They were used! . Maybe its just the boy dogs .

Mine is a PPP - pantie pinching pinscher

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2009 09:12

my woofa may do many things < sighs>

but he has NEVER stolen knickers - clean or dirty!!!

Bella21 · 08/08/2009 09:24

You sure?

Sure he doesn't floss with your g-strings, oh blonde one?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2009 09:34

my g's stay firmly on my bum thank you very much!!!

Bella21 · 08/08/2009 10:53

From my very limited experience of g strings, I don't think they stay on anyone's bum at all, iyswim

BitOfFun · 08/08/2009 10:58

Pepper is with DP at the vets as we speak Bella. I shall update when he gets back!

Bella21 · 08/08/2009 11:00

Oh brill, BOF.

and there was me just thinking it was the g strings that had drawn you in

Can I put a £1 each way on anal glands?

Bella21 · 08/08/2009 11:02

I should clarify: I'm betting BOF's dog has an anal gland problem.

Nothing to do with g strings.

Oh gawd.....

BitOfFun · 08/08/2009 11:04

You can, but the bald sore bit is above her tail and to the side, top of the haunch iyswim, so not all that anally really. But we shall see...

MarmadukeScarlet · 08/08/2009 11:18

Well I have a sh*t eating Slovakian Sheep, pony, fox, cat, rabbit - she is not fussed.

I cannot work out what is more gross, letting her eat it or actually having to get it out of her mouth and touch it with my fingers considering wearing latex gloves on all walks.

Even used knicks would be more pleasant.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2009 12:11

Blondes shudders at MarmadukeScarlet shit eating hound

that has got to be the worst offender

and bella g's do stay on bum and even up it

bof - hows pepper?

trust bella to think it is an anal problem

SHOUTSTO BELLA

this isnt the sex thread you know - just the nice PPPP pet puppy problem page

Bella21 · 08/08/2009 13:02

Marmaduke - I will thank you not to lower the tone of this thread

BOF dogs often bite there because they can't really get to their anal glands, iyswim. at your lack of doggie anal gland knowledge, but perhaps you actually have a life

Blondie you fool nobody, my sweet.

Marmaduke I thought of you the other night - there was a lady with a expensive mongrel labradoodle at puppy class and I asked her if it was a Spinone. I know, I had my naughty hat on. She looked compeletely baffled

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/08/2009 10:25

Bella LOL, I thought of you at my puppy party for the same reason.

Marmaduke is that a Wheaten Terrier? Owner no it's a ...

God, it was 'normous too.

Exactly like todder group, my poor pfbd was traumatised by a thug Great Dane, who was only 10 weeks and the size of a small horse. 'Mother' of GD was busy chatting and flashing bling, I rofl when she loaded him into a 2 seater sports car.

BOF Bella will be down there with her gloves on in a jiffy to give 'em a squeeze oh the joys of helping out at the vets - and you chose that for a profession, why exactly?

I know I should start my own thread, but I'm hardly on here nowadays due to excessive fruit and veg picking/management, puppy and school holidays. I am traumatised also.

As much as I love my darling pup (when she is not biting me/DC) I am disappointed in her. She's a blardy Weimeraner! Slovakian rough-haired my jacksy. Smooth as a baby's. They are supposed to be like ickle cutie fluffy wuffy grey teddy bears. Going to have to rename her something less spiky (called Teasel) Could have saved myself a fortune and she's a blardy shortarse too - even the 10 week old labrador (called Marley incidently) at the puppy party was bigger than her and she was 12 weeks then!

Bella21 · 12/08/2009 09:03

Did someone say anal glands?

What do you mean you've got a blardy short arse Weimaraner, Marmaduke? Why didn't you get a blardy Dobermann? She will blossom, I am sure. Unless someone sold you a schnoodle?

My new girl was allowed to stay up late and watch Send In The Dogs last night. Loves it. Doesn't yap or try to look behind tv, but sits there quite transfixed with her little brow all furrowed. So cute.

She's getting big now though, I struggle to pick her up and tuck her under my arm now. She must be about 12 kg and all legs

lol at your fellow pups, esp the Great Dane My class is 90% JRT's, with a sprinkling of border, cockers and of course the doodle. Felt really sorry for the chap who approached me with his dachshund - he wanted a dobe but got a dachsie cos they are 'just like dobes without the legs'

MarmadukeScarlet · 12/08/2009 10:09

LOL at a Dackle being dobes without legs, should have gone for a mini pin.

schnoodle? there was a collie/poodle at my puppy party, don't know what the 'breed' name was

Bella21 · 12/08/2009 14:44

Have you got an iphone Marmaduke? I have a brill game on mine where you identify all the dog breeds

There are schnoodles, goldendoodles, cockapoos - the lot.

And proper dogs too!

MarmadukeScarlet · 12/08/2009 22:54

Ohhhh, I want that!

Am off to Slovakia tomorrow for a wedding on Sat, will be smuggling a proper fuzzy puppy home if I have my way!
