I made macaroni cheese for dh for his birthday and out the small serving that was left over into the dogs bowl before thinking really

Is it really bad?

Won't do him any harm, but might make his poo tomorrow really squity and horrible. Dairy stuff disagrees with my dog.

He'll be ok, one fairly savage dump and it will be out of his system.

Our springer had leftovers most days for his whole life, and lived till the grand age of 13

TeaOneSugar · 18/06/2009 22:19

My springer is 12 and will eat any leftovers, particularly anything my dd leaves - never causes a problem.

She'd be delighted with mac & cheese, she loves pasta.

I dropped a tin of hot chocolate powder the other day, she thought it was christmas .

SlartyBartFast · 18/06/2009 22:22

mine still sits under the table while we eat

SlartyBartFast · 18/06/2009 22:22

oh, and she is 16

I think given that the cheese was extra mature cheddar, the dog will be fine. Never give him cheese strings (obviously).

My MILs dog has lived all her life on white bread mixed with the oil from cans of tuna, and other non-natural-diet leftovers, and is very old.

The only thing ours ever turned his nose up at was brie, funnily enough. Extra mature cheddar would have been gone in a flash though. I have friends from Nepal who are appalled that in this country we actually spend good money on food that is just for a dog, they would never give a dog anhything other than leftovers!

GrimmaTheNome · 18/06/2009 22:27

onions can cause anaemia in dogs and cats, AFAIK thats the main no-no for leftovers. So, mac cheese fine, curry not. (If I've got meaty leftovers in a sauce made with onion, I rinse them off before recycling through the dog).

I give the leftovers/salmon skin etc together with the normal dried food, seems to still produce manageable poops that way.

The tin of hot chocolate powder could have been a problem... good thing it wasnt pure cocoa.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/06/2009 22:29

Drusilla - that is odd, our last dog adored brie. If we had some in the fridge he could detect the door opening from upstairs and be down in a flash!

GrimmaTheNome · 18/06/2009 22:31

As to dogs eating rich food... I believe that wild animals eat the organs and fat preferentially over lean meat. (and crunch the bones).

Drusilla · 18/06/2009 22:32

Grimma - ours seemed to like the smell, he would slosh it round his mouth for a bit but then spit it out I think the taste was never how he expected it to be!

I fed my first two dogs according to a strict, scientifically programmed (well almost) plan - without deviation. It cost us an absolute fortune. One had a sensitive tummy that never did sort itself, although he did live to be 12 which is a ripe old age for a rottie, the second was on a low protein diet because high protein is the doggie equivalent of fruit shoot and he was a maniac.

My little dog i have now looks quite disappointed when he gets proper dog food instead of left overs. He is given the cheapest tins (turns his nose up at anything else, but then i think Chappie is the best dog food on the market bar none) and never the same make. He licks yoghurt pots clean, loves curry and shepherds pie. Sadly for him, we have just gone veggie so chappie it is then.

To be honest, my current dog seems to be the healthiest of all three.

Todays Fred Basset cartoon gives the dog's perspective!

Were there any after effects from the macaroni?

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/06/2009 15:03

our puppy ate stole a 500g block of cheese and was fine

as someone said , they are human canine dustbins - well ours is - no food is safe from him!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/06/2009 15:04

GeckoLovingHornedThing · 20/06/2009 15:07
