How soon to leave new puppy with friends if we go on holiday?

Getting a lab puppy on 21 June - she will be 8 weeks old. Wondering about trying to book a week away from 15 August. Friend who has a 2 year old lab has said she would take our puppy or we have some friends who don't have a dog or I know a breeder who takes dogs. Dog will have been with us for 8 weeks and will be 16 weeks old by then.

DH is worried that it is too soon and the dog will be traumatised. (I think he would have been less worried if I had suggested leaving DS at that age!!!)

Any ideas?

Cool - and when you get the pup Orangfish will house train it in one week for you

Books like that are brilliant. I bought the Gina Ford (!!!) one with DS - it arrived on Friday, I read it in bed that night, DS woke up next morning saying "no nappies I am a big boy now" and was trained in 3 days! Hoping for same with pup .

Yes, and you will end up with a wonderfully socialised puppy, a house trained dog, some great holidays and the lifelong satisfaction of knowing that your life is not ruled by a dog (believe me, it is better for the dog too).

If the dog gets heavily traumatised and tries to comit suicide every time you leave it alone you can ring Bella39 and ask for the details of her dog's psychiatrist.

Ha - that might actually have been funny if I had said any of that.

I see you're a namechanger - not Lewis by any chance?

OrangeFish · 05/06/2009 10:13

Jokes to the side, see the reviews of the book in Amazon, it does work (I have trained 3 dogs with that methood, only had a few hickups with one but she is a lost case anyways).

Provided the dog has not been removed from the mother far too early and he has not spend a lot of time in a crate in a pet shop, and that you are a bit consistant you can train it very easily.

Any advice on what to do about DH though? I reckon he will be more traumatised than any of us!

No, no Lewis here. But if it helps to calm your paranoia I'm one of the oldies.

bella39 · 05/06/2009 10:16

So I'm paranoid now?

Don't worry Buda, we are just socialising ourselves, trial and error thing

Are you getting a boy or a girl? (the puppy, I mean)

bella39 · 05/06/2009 10:24

Have a lovely holiday, Buda x

Buda · 05/06/2009 10:29

OrangeFish - it's a girl - yellow lab. to be called Cody - name chosen by DS after one of his fave TV programs!

bella - I will, thanks! x Am sure I will be 'speaking' to you before though - am sure to have lots of questions once pup arrives!

Hello Buda,

Your pup will be fine. We left our yellow lab pup for 2 weeks when she was 18 weeks old. Admittedly it was with my brother who had a dog of his own.

She is 12 months now and stays with him every time we go away. It helps that his dog is really well trained and he expects the same dog behaviour I do!!

Yellow Labs are the best!!! ( sorry Bella !)

Have a great holiday!

How come my apology was deleted? I just said that I was talking about troll paranoia, is that a personal attack?

hatwoman · 05/06/2009 12:05

has to be said - it seems like an odd deletion...it's not like the thread was imploding and you were all calling each other horrible names.
