buying a german shepherd

We are currently doing our research as buying a german shepherd.

Now we are not looking to show/breed our dog but i'm amazed at the difference in prices. We're going to look at some which cost £350 and some that are costing £650! the more expensive ones, the lady asked all the questions, and seems very interested in the kind of home it's coming too (which i know is good), told me all about hip scores etc, will be kc reg and comes with papers. However, the cheaper one won't be kc reg,but the father is - but is being brought up around other pets and kids.

My question is, does it really matter as we are not intending to breed or show the dog? obviously we'll look at the parents and see what the temperaments are like but we really did not want to spend £650. Do you think it'll be a very unhealthy dog?

There are no guarantees that either source would give you a healthy puppy for sure. GSDs are a breed more prone to suffer with hip dysplasia (amongst other things) and personally I would go with a reputable breeder that breeds from hip scored parents with low hip scores for both parents - that minimises the chances of any pups inheriting hip problems though is still not a guarantee.

Another option to consider is a rescue dog - if you are not bothered about papers you may be able to find a suitable young dog through a rescue kennels or a GSD rescue branch. It could be a cheaper option than either of the breeders you have looked at.

Whichever you choose make sure you get yourself a decent (cover for life) insurance policy for any puppy asap and at least then if you do get unlucky enough to need veterinary attention the costs are not an issue.

Why buy a dog from a breeder when there are so many perfect, unwanted puppies? If the health of your dog is important then don't go for a pedigree dog.

I know you probably want a pup but there ia a lovely GSD for rehoming at Many Tears rescue centre.

I wonder whether it's worth having a look on there
