Quick question about chew toys for puppy

doggiesayswoof · 29/05/2009 15:00

I am stocking up a bit - we pick up our pup tomorrow.

I have wandered up and down the aisles of pets at home and I'm a bit mystified. What chews are suitable for puppies? I'm worried about bits breaking off and choking hazards (or am I thinking of human babies ?)

Any advice?

TIA

I feel inspired to start toy rotation tomorrow

KingCanuteIAm · 29/05/2009 23:35

Don't listen to these other loons posters, you do not need a spreadsheet to organise a decent toy rota, I have found that you can function perfectly well by only having as many toys as you have counting fingers

Pingpong · 30/05/2009 10:08

have no fear I'm not doing a spreadsheet I just thought I would pick up some of the many toys that are scattering the garden and rotate. Although pup has a habit of helping herself to anything remotely chewable - garden hosepipe for example

KingCanuteIAm · 30/05/2009 11:40

It does work, it is amasing how much more exciting a toy is when they have not seen it for a couple of days!

bella39 · 30/05/2009 12:03

If you want to do it properly then you need 2 -3 toys per day, i.e. 14-21 in total. In order to rotate these efeectively you need some kind of chart/spreadsheet/application....

bella39 · 30/05/2009 12:04

efeectively is how I pronounce 'effectively' when I'm hacked off that other people just do it wrong....

KingCanuteIAm · 30/05/2009 12:12

Nah Bella, you need a Monday pile, a Tuesday pile, a Wednesday pile.... works for me

bella39 · 30/05/2009 12:19

Don't want to talk about your piles, thank you, KC

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/05/2009 12:29

smac - i know what you mean

our monster has eaten tennis racket handles by the 100's as well as baby teething rattles, mr potato head ears

worst of all he MURDERED my furry slippers i had at work - came in from garden and looked as if an animal had been slaughtered in the hall

fluff and all

BAD DOG morethanyoubargainfor* again know what you mean - we used to have lots of tetras and now not many - now colin has gone....

we will see if they live for longer if we buy some more

Pingpong · 30/05/2009 21:13

Okay another question.
If you are having 2-3 toys per day do you put different toys in the cage or do the 2-3 for that day have to go in the cage too when you go out or go to bed?
And do bones count as a toy? (sorry that's 2 questions)
Blondeshavemorefun I could start a list of all the things my pup has destroyed but TBH I'd be quicker doing a spreadsheet for the toy rotation!

morethanyoubargainfor · 30/05/2009 21:25

Yes i do have the same ones, bones are very occassional treats so not toys really IMHO.

haing said that when my lad was in crate i used to have special crate toys, which basically was a childrens shoe box (or any with a lid) fileed with other cardvoard things, (boxes, inner tubes from kitchen roll etc) i used to fill box es with treats and then cover them all in paper (not newspaper tho) put the lid on the box and give it to him just before we left the house. It kept him busy for hours tearing all the cardboard and sometimes finding treats! Hope you understand what i mean, but probably not as KC has already pointed out i am one of the loons!

morethanyoubargainfor · 30/05/2009 21:25

by the Lad i do mean the dog and not my DS!

KingCanuteIAm · 30/05/2009 22:16

morethan, you are indeed a loon but that is an inspired idea, fantastic distraction for a chewer too!

morethanyoubargainfor · 31/05/2009 09:21

i glad you are coming round to my way of thinking Kingcanute! being a loon has it advanagtes!

bella39 · 31/05/2009 09:35

Oh yes, I remember you suggesting this 'pass the parcel' type thing before, morethan. It's a terrific idea.

Smac - glad to see you are treating this subject with the gravity it deserves. Thereare people on here who are somewhat frivolous in their approach to toys, and it don't have piss me off

My dogs get huge raw knuckle bones once a week and spend the rest of the week gnawing at them. They do occasionally pander to their Mama and pick up some of the toys I have bought them, too

bella39 · 31/05/2009 09:36

don't half piss me off

KingCanuteIAm · 31/05/2009 10:02

I think I may be catching the looniness that is prevelant around here - I blame bella of course, but that is because it is all her fault

Pingpong · 31/05/2009 21:59

doggiesaywoof
sorry your thread got a bit hijacked with rotational advice.
How is the new pup anyway? settling in okay? demolishing everything in sight? What breed did you get?

doggiesayswoof · 01/06/2009 10:55

Ok this has taken off!!

thanks all - will read later

no time to post as mad weekend with new pup (lovely wee border terrier) and I'm now at work - dh at home with his hands full

All very exciting and lovely

Will post later and put some pics up.

So far the kong has gone down well, and the blue squeaky bone caused a pretty explosive reaction from puppy (in a good way)

bella39 · 01/06/2009 10:56

Good news

Sherbert is off to look at a border puppy later too

doggiesayswoof · 01/06/2009 12:49

Now read whole thread.

My eyes have been opened.

We only have 5 toys atm, clearly this will need to change

I am a spreadsheet fiend, so I may be tempted over to the dark side of toy rotation

I love the cardboard boxes idea for when she's in the crate - inspired!

bella39 · 01/06/2009 13:06

You will not regret it, doggie...

morethanyoubargainfor · 01/06/2009 16:48
