son wants a frog

Ds2 is 10 and has been on and on about getting frogs as pets for ages. I assumed that this would be impossible but tonight he tells me that he has discussed this with a friend who has advised buying a tank and albino frogs from Dobbies. Eeek - it'snow top of his Christmas list (yes, in May).

We have a dog already but apparently, she 'isn't as much fun as a frog' and 'a frog could learn better tricks' (probably true as we have the World's Most Stupid Dog).

Any tips/hints/frog disaster stories?

I only know about aquatic frogs (dwarf clawed frogs for example). They can be kept in a smallish aquarium of about 10 gallons, they need a heater and a filter and some places to hide. These kind do not need to be able to get out of the water. They don't do an awful lot though, I think your son would be a bit disappointed

I did find this page about frogs- allaboutfrogs.org/info/doctor/first.html

Maybe he would prefer something he can play with or pick up like a hamster or gerbil?

Thanks sweetnitrano - I'll have a look at that. I think these albino ones are aquatic so that's handy to know. I would much prefer a hamster myself

can't you just entice some wild ones into your garden? my mil has some

SolidGoldBrass · 29/05/2009 21:27

Send him off to a nearby stream with a bucket...

We have got 2 tadpoles from the local park pond ..is that really cruel dgc love em

marmoset · 29/05/2009 21:39

Yes, last time he expressed this desire, he wanted to go and round up a frog or two in the park but he couldn't catch any which was lucky as we don't have a pond and with a new baby in the house, no chance of one any time soon!
Tadpoles would be agood start, right enough but my friend's dog just lapped hers up so I'm not sure if I can take the carnage

frogs are not a good house pet, tadpole rearing aside. have you got a garden, can you do wildlife habitat? or does he just want a house frog...

southeastastra · 29/05/2009 21:44

the frogs at my mil just live in a load of damp wood not a pond

marmoset · 29/05/2009 21:57

southeastastra - We can do damp wood

fishie - I think he wants a house frog but quite why I'm not sure. This wildlife habitat/damp wood thing could be the answer to my probs, perhaps with some well protected tadpoles thrown in for good measure.

What's ideal frog habitat, without a pond?

What about an axolotl (sp) although you can;t hold them.

Or this is listed as a good beginner's frog

or maybe a toad

Those all list hte basic keeping requirements too
