i know of labs that have bitten so i do not think you can judge a dog on its breed.

A lot of JRTs are snappy but I have also met many who are great family dogs, hopefully Alisha will be able to cultivate a fantastic family sog out to this one

Just be consistant and do your best not to get frustrated Alisha, good luck

look, kanute, you are doing a wonderful job here, you are like the tiktok in pets, iykwim...but people exused their rash, you give him away, never have pets again, and excused it, because I posted in aibu...which is not great, but is the culture of mumsnet, conforming ..you get away there...but I was told if posted in pets people will be supportive...not you in person, I isolated you as a support , which you are, you know what ya talking about...just saying, really you post that kind a post and people will be down on you...and op here and me, are animal lovers and learned...but someone really despondent and not really with the programme might be even more disheartened?
so, not really great...
but your advise is sound ...and we had calming period, and then when dh came back an upheaval, boundery setting time and are calming down again...but, he is doing good in the cage/crate...when we are out....however, he has started going for his blanket in the cage now, shewing wise..
but all in all, he is a good ole sole, young sole, lol....but kids are still wary of him...because he nips at times...

alisha29 · 29/05/2009 23:16

KINGCANUTE FOR PRIME MINSTER ALL SAY 'I'

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 29/05/2009 23:20

Fantastic news that he is coming on FairLady, some dogs always chew something if you can limit it to the blanket in the crate then I think you can count that a success story

If you don't want to keep replacing those you could try the Kevlar beds which are quite tough and may just put him off enough to stop him. I assume you give him chew toys when he is in his crate?

Hopefully the nipping with the dc will stop in time, again just being consistent with firmness and making sure the dc don't 'flap' too much around him until he gets the idea.

I know what you are saying about people being disheartened if not handled with care and you are right. TBH I am a bit embarressed by the way a couple of threads have gone recently, one with a poster who clearly needed support and another poster came in and said her piece. The person in need of support got upset and now I dare not even ask her if she is ok and how things are working out incase she is angry or upset with me about the whole debarcle

Thank you for the compliments! I am just a little

FairLadyRantALot · 29/05/2009 23:20

yes, kingkanute is a good and happy egg, as they say..

oh, and sometimes it is a good thing to be kicked into shape, lol.

KingCanuteIAm · 29/05/2009 23:20

Lol, thanks Alisha!

FairLadyRantALot · 29/05/2009 23:25

...but yeah, the hande with care does not just count for the pet, it is the owner too...albeit, I desreved to be put in place, but thought op went into right place, and still got similar posts of some peope...but, I know it must be frustrating....because you don't always have the full story...
did giggle in my thread people saying, I obviously wanted a duplicate of my old dog...yeah, that is why we chose a different breed, colour and size one...lol...
I thik sometimes people forget, that whilst we choose to have a pet, t can be as difficult as having a child, but, with a child we often have an automatic bond, where most of the time we have to build it....
and of course, pets can often cause far more havoc than you may ever anticipate, lol

KingCanuteIAm · 29/05/2009 23:32

Often I think people get cross because so many people do get a dog/puppy/cat/tortoise without thinking it through then want to chuck it out once it gets too much trouble/less cute, which is totally fair enough - I do too. But they forget that the particular op they are talking to may not actually be one of those people IYSWIM.

They get rightiously cross and miss the moment when they can focus on the Ops actual problem and help them with it.

fairydust · 29/05/2009 23:52

A jack russell dog / terrier are notourious for being snappy little dogs you could calm it down by getting plant spray full of cold water and when the dog bites grab the spray and spray it in the dogs face, however these types of dogs do have a tendacey of nipping who ever walks past ankles.

you's be far better with a more family orrintated dog i.e lab , springer

overthehill · 29/05/2009 23:59

Can I add a bit? We got a young terrier-type dog from the RSPCA after our elderly collie died and it was a great culture shock and really hard work training him: he would just wee and poo anywhere as well as jumping up at people, especially over-excited children, biting ankles and hands, nearly pulling us over on walks and he was extremely nervous and wary of strangers, particularly men.

He's now two and so much better - and idolised by our children. He does still bite hands and feet, but we either give him a toy to bite instead, say a firm "no!" or use a tip from Dog Borstal and spray/threaten to spray him with water, which always stops him in his tracks. I also make sure to stay away from groups of excited children as he can't help but get hyper, and I agree with others who say it's important for your own children not to wind him up.

We have a Halti head collar which he doesn't really like and periodically tries to get off, but it's great as it really stops him pulling.

He does still jump up too, but again we have to be firm. One of the difficulties is that a couple of friends ignore it when he jumps up/bites them/pulls on the lead, and one even lets him sit beside her on the settee at her house(!) so he's not exactly getting a consistent approach. However, he's got lots of energy (as it sounds as though your puppy has) and they do take him out for walks, which is great for him and them so we can't really complain.

Is there anyone who could help exercise your puppy in order to help burn off some of his excess energy?

Good luck with your little dog and I do hope you get some help.
