I'm getting one this weekend

I've heard they are great with kids, more laid back than other terrier breeds. However some of them can be aggressive with other dogs but I reckon this should not be a problem if you get a puppy and it gets used to your existing dog (and other dogs) while young

They have rough coats, they do shed quite a bit apparently.

I have one who is 10 months old. He is a really great little dog, fantastic with my children and very tolerant. He will happily be pushed around in a doll's pram. They don't lose much hair, but you do need to strip them a couple of times a year. Everyone I have met who has one, thinks they are fab and I would highly recommend them. Do make sure your puppy is coming from a good breeder.

Get a pure bred, they are so good with kids, so tolerant, but militant little bandits and you'll have to be 'master' from the start.

Ours is wonderful, but be sure and socialise them EARLY with any cats/rodents in the house - or there will be blood....

i have to be master with the beagle cos he thinks hes top dog we havent got any cats or rodents in the house just 3 kids

We had one a few years ago. He was a lovely dog, very friendly, and great with the kids.
The only problem with him was the amount of hair he shed.It was remarkable, especially as we had wooden floors at the time. The hair would form into 'tumble-weed' and blow across the room.
In fact, if you ever watch Ken Barlow on Corrie, and he has picked up that 'Eccles' Border Terrier, look at his jumper . It makes us laugh every time! (Think we need to get a life).

I know 3..both great with kids and other dogs. Lovely temperaments.

Beagle (hound) vs Border (terrier)-very different.
My Dad has two Borders (and that may be the problem) but they have bitten numerous people over the years. They are now 13yrs old and will still srap with each other.I suspect it is becasue they are litter brothers, they have never bitten a family member so very loyal bt I have to say I prefer hounds over terriers any day.

the beagle is great but a bugger off the lead when he sees other dogs as we struggle to get him back as he wants to play so wanted a not so head strong no 2 for no1 to follow back to us if that makes any sense at all

I have a border terrier and he is lovely - laid back and good with most other dogs (not black labradors for some reason) Terrible with sheep mind you but we don't give him the opportunity. Pretty good with the children although he does get fed up with too much of them but growls rather than anything worse. Doesn't loose much hair - we send him off to be stripped twice a year. I have come across borders who don't like other dogs or strangers but I think generally as terriers go they are easier. He also gets on fine with our cat and was reasonably biddable when it came to obedience training him.

I'd say if you want a not so headstrong dog then probably not a border.

They were originally bred to hunt, so they're "designed" to keep pace with a horse for a long time, and if you have one dog who takes off and doesn't come back then the border will most likely be a partner in crime.

We have a 6 yr old BT - we got her as a companion for our unruly Jack Russell and they were the best of friends/partners in crime. The only problem we have had is aggression towards other dogs (as mentioned by others on here) which started when she was around 2 yrs I have met many other BT owners who experience the same (we recognise each other across parks and beaches as we are the only ones with dogs on leads avoiding everyone else!) I have heard that the girls are worse on the aggression front than the boys? However she is fantastic with all people and very tolerant of kids including our 16 mth DS who makes her life a misery on a daily basis pulling legs/ears/tail etc She does shed quite a lot of hair though (recognise the hair tumbleweed mentioned ) and she is very bouncy and also whines a lot when she wants something!

She was easily trainable and is excellent on and off the lead (when no other dogs around) as far as coming back, heel work and fetching etc. She is also an excellent swimmer! They are full of energy and it is very hard to wear her out even after a 3 mile jog so be prepared to take plenty of exercise.

Good luck

it is all about how you bring them up. my border is absolutely amazing with kids and other dogs, although it took a bit of work as he is a rescue. they are very tolerent dogs and lovely companions.

as for the hair loss, if you get them stripped once or twice a year, they dont shed their coat. this costs about £10-20 a time

hope this helps
