Am hopefully getting a chicken in about 6 weeks+ (he's currently 2 weeks old)

I've ordered these things for him - those of you with cats can you give input please :D the order hasn't gone through so i can cancel things if they will be useless through experience.

Here

hanging bed

balls

bee

fish

mice

scratch box

kong cat toy

and finally the cat tree. It can be used as 2 seperate cat trees, or one big one

Oh and while I have all you lovely people here, what cat litter would you recommend? I'd like clumping, and as low odour as possible. I have a litter tray like this left over from my old house bunny that I'm hoping to recycle into a cat tray, but I also have one similar to this although it wouldn't fit them for long I don't think?

whiskers.. afaik as long as there's no metal plate in the door it's dooable

cheesesarnie · 23/05/2009 22:47

we will name the second-dont you worry!

Rumpel · 23/05/2009 22:55

yes you can - we had upvc doors in our last house and still had a cat flap. They were so nice they sent us a prototype as we had a tiny sanwich of metal in our door which stopped the lasewr from reading our 3 cats microchips - and it works! Yeah! My poor old tom had lost 10% pf his body weight due to nast neighbour cat coming in - not to mention the screaming and cat piss everwhere!! Makes a massive masive difference - fab!!!

chickchickchickee · 23/05/2009 22:59

I'm pretty sure the kitten who is definitely coming home will be Mozart, and I'm thinking if i get him a buddy he'll be Monet..

PINKTULIPS - was it netmums? I am gasp chairmum for my area for nm but have been on mn far longer - they both do good fgs!

RockinSockBunnies · 23/05/2009 23:18

I'd think twice about getting the cat tree thing. We had one for our cat, but it broke very quickly (pole became free from base, couldn't reattach it). Furthermore, you can guarantee that the cat will scratch anything that it's not supposed to (carpets, wooden furniture, doors) whilst avoiding its dedicated scratching pole!

Also, the cat will no doubt leap around the house, jump up and down things, so won't really need an indoor cat tree.

PinkTulips · 23/05/2009 23:20

nope, an irish site... probably why the lack of response.... most cats in this country live outside, have rarely seen a cat flap and few cats are chipped so the need for a microchip flap must be infintismal!

sammysamsam · 23/05/2009 23:34

ooh, surecat flap looks fab- mines an indoor moggy so dont need it..

anyways, just a recommendation for the cat litter- i buy 'Otto' from Lidl- 10kg for £1.69 and far better than its fellow cheepo competition. i regularly remove clumps so it doesn't stick out the house, and also, cat litter tray with a lid is a must (gave filters to reduce odour) ours is katloo i think..
+1 on pingpong balls
+1 cat teaser
really dont think you should bother with tree or basket/bed- the cats can't be persuaded to do anything they dont want, and from my experience, just hog a certain area of the house to snooze in..
good luck with the 'chickens'

blithedance · 23/05/2009 23:57

Just thought

this is a good sort of radiator bed, we previously had one like the OP linked to, which eventually broke under the combined weight of cat and DC's mucking about. In the photo it's the wrong way up .

Mind you, our cats are getting old and fragile which is why they get so indulged. Maybe not a good place to start with a kitten, she'd probably prefer a cardboard box!

BillSilverFoxBuchanan · 24/05/2009 09:09

I started off with the Worlds Best (the one that's made of corn) and found that good but very expensive.

If the cat tree arrives and you're not sure about it, I'd recommend the Catrix modular system. It's very sturdy, and you can build it up as and when you have the money/inclination.

Another vote for 2 kittens here btw. I rescued a 10mth old Coonie boy last summer and am now on the lookout for another

AnitaBlake · 24/05/2009 09:31

I would recommend getting a bottle of catnip concentrate from pets at home. Spray it on the scratch post, and they'll love it more than anything in the whole world! I've always used it and have no problems with unwanted scratching, the trick is to attract the cat to something more desirable rather than putting them off stuff. Also good on beds, toys, anything you want them to use really!

chickchickchickee · 24/05/2009 12:22

that Catrix stuff looks fabulous!!

Our cat loves her radiator bed (she's in it at the moment even though the heating is turned off).

She is one of the cats that doesn't react to catnip either and ignores all toys after an inital play - but what she really loves is a piece of thick long string which she is happy chasing and playing with for hours (alternatively the wire off a spanish bottle of red wine is great fun too)
