Mother cat has buggered off for a walk leaving her 3-week-old kittens and I want to go to bed

I've called her but she hasn't come, and I can't lock her out - the kittens shouldn't be without their mummy all night, surely? Or can they?

I have to be up early and really need to go to bed

No they shouldn't be without her. They'll need feeding during the night.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 22:34

Have you tried taking the kittens, or even one, outside, though just hold them, don't place them on the ground. If they cry she may appear.

Ah yes I'm going to try that now, one of them cries amazingly loudly.

Good luck. I hope you can get her in.

castille · 19/05/2009 22:54

Not yet, though the little one wailed to order. Will try again with same kitten around the front case she's gone off that way.

She's done this before - disappeared for hours - but not in the evening. I hope she isn't planning on making a night of it

they need feeding every 2 hours at that age! hope she's back asap

SlartyBartFast · 19/05/2009 23:02

she will be hunting wont she?
she will come back soon with a bird or somesuch?

ahh

castille · 19/05/2009 23:08

Oh God no, please no livestock (or deadstock)

She's done this before - went off for 6 hours during the day when they were only a week old! I think something might have happened as she came back looking dishevelled and exhausted that time. We were getting really worried about the kittens, but they got over it.

Need sleeeeeep

Hmm - do you think your mother cat may have ishooooos? Do you think she's out trying to reclaim the feline she used to be? Perhaps she's finding all the relentless feeding and clawing of nipples a bit much?

Maybe you need a cat health visitor.........

Seriously - hope she comes back soon!

castille · 19/05/2009 23:22

I'm on the verge of calling social services, honestly, she's pushing my patience a bit too far

She might have ishoos with motherhood, that or she's got a job doing the night shift at Netto's?

How she can leave those gorgeous kittens for more than 5 minutes I don't know...

OP posts:
Shitemum · 19/05/2009 23:36

She's probably on heat again...

castille · 19/05/2009 23:37

Noooo! After 3 weeks!

OP posts:
PinkTulips · 19/05/2009 23:43

yep... it happens that quick.

can you leave the window open for her?

PlumBumMum · 19/05/2009 23:47

OMG Castille I have an abandoned kitten I reckon its 3/4 weeks old
please tell me I don't need to get up through the night and feed it (Iknow I will) I don't even have proper food [arggh]

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 23:48

It'll need fed every 2-3 hours Plumbum. The link mentions how often I think.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 23:49

And how much.

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2009 00:04

yeap read it thunderduck, this is why I haven't had dc4 yet wasn't ready to go back to night feeds, lucky its soo small and cute, we called it Lucky too

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2009 00:13

Mine looks like the 2 where it says they will try to stand

castille · 20/05/2009 08:32

Well it's been nearly 12 hours and still no mummy cat

Have called the vet and she gave me a feed recipe to make up for the kittens so I must go shopping now (PlumBumMum - do you want me to post the recipe?)

I hope nothing's happened to her...

OP posts:
PinkTulips · 20/05/2009 09:20

that is strange castille... i hope she's ok and turns up looking very ashamed of herself in a while.

pity we're two countries apart as i have a nursing queen here who probably wouldn't notice 2 extra...

good luck with the kitten milk cookery... don't suppose ypou could post it up?

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2009 12:38

] castille, hope your mummy cat is alright, went and bought some cat milk think it is still too young for that, although made up some of dds Lactose free milk he liked that,
has pee'd so thats a good sign but have been on to someone who works in a vets they say you have to wipe round their wee bums with cotton wool to make them go as the mummy would lick their bum

PinkTulips · 20/05/2009 13:13

lactose free is good but cat's milk is very high in protein so something needs to be added to it to bulk it up... there are recipes online or else go to a vet and buy some kitten formula.... it will starve if it doesn't get something soon, lord knows how long the poor mite was away from it's mother before you found it.

the cat milk in supermarkets is just processed normal milk... not suitable for kittens at all.

after every feed you need to wipe his bum with warn damp cotton wool, don't worry, they don't poo til they start solids and that's when they start using the litter ray themselves

PaulaAtMummyKnowsBest · 20/05/2009 13:53

has your cat come back?

lolaandned · 20/05/2009 14:00

did your cat come back yet and how are the wee kittens?
