Opinions please, due to get a kitten in a few weeks, not sure if I want a male or female and would like to hear from other people.

Female IME are

  • less inclined to wander
  • better mousers
  • don't generally spray but are more expensive to get neutered.
Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 20:50

I don't suppose two are an options. It's so much fun having two, not much more work, and they keep each other entertained.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 20:50

Option not options.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 20:51

And having two is an. I think I need chocolate.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/05/2009 20:51

I've had both and the girl cat was much more friendly and affectionate than the boy cat.

tigerdriver · 19/05/2009 20:52

two are good: we have a boy and girl. they are inseperable at the moment, which is very cute. Boy is more outgoing (thinks he's tiger), girl is more cautious but they keep doing that little checking look thing when they're deciding what to do.

Can you get two?

MarthaFarquhar · 19/05/2009 20:54

ooh yes, get two.

I'd get another like a shot, but current cat has firmly vetoed this.

Takver · 19/05/2009 21:13

I agree, two much less likely to trash your house than one, as they can play together

PlumBumMum · 19/05/2009 21:18

Sorry to hijack but dh has just tonight come home with the cutest little male kitten that was abandoned, it is very small,
is in a shoe box(it is only the size of the width of the box) I have gave it some watered down milk with a dropper, what else do I do?
Have a warm hot water bottle in shoe box too, do you think it will be okay?

npg1 · 19/05/2009 21:53

plumbum, sorry cant be much help.

Not sure about having 2. Do they really trash your houses? All im worried about is my B&O speakers, hope it wont scrap at them. I am hoping while it is tiny I will keep it in kitchen dining room and put a stair gate up (the meshy ones that you can adjust) hopfully it wont jump over the gate. I would have to loose it around the house as it will be so tiny!

Cows milk is not suitable for kittens (or cats). See here for more info - if you scroll down far enough there is a big section on feeding. You could maybe contact the rspca or Cats protection for some more help.

here

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 22:03

Goats milk is better than cows milk, but ideally you should be able to get a formula for kittens from either a pet shop or a vet tomorrow.

MoominMymbleandMy · 19/05/2009 22:13

npg1, I would go for a female because they are happier with far smaller territories and so don't wander.

But better still, I would go for two kittens. They keep each other company and are a delight to watch playing together.

Plum, your DH is a hero! I've never looked after a kitten so small, I'm afraid but if you start a separate thread I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will turn up. Good luck, anyway.

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 22:26

Here's some information on looking after very young kittens

PlumBumMum · 19/05/2009 22:55

Thanks for those I think from reading its about 3/4 weeks old hope it survives until morn

Thunderduck · 19/05/2009 23:50

I'd make it every 3 hours for a feed.

PaulaAtMummyKnowsBest · 20/05/2009 14:01

plumbum - where are you?

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2009 14:59

I'm just outside of Belfast, but have discovered that girl across the road works in a vets shes going to pop in later have a look at him

dh said he must have been put in the bin, because he got emptied out of a bin lorry in a clean box

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/05/2009 16:54

Put in the bin! I really, really hate some people.

How is he today Plum?

underpaidandoverworked · 20/05/2009 17:06

npg1 - a stairgate will not keep a kitten in the kitchen - you'll be surprised how high they can leap , especially with a mesh gate, they just climb it .

I've always had females, don't smell as much - but beware when they are in heat and 'Tom' comes a-calling . If they get out you'll have kittens galore.

Plumbum, can't believe that anyone could harm them, or leave them to die. Despicable - how's it doing...

thirtysomething · 20/05/2009 17:25

i have two neutered boys and one spayed girl cat - the boys are far more affectionate and, dare I say it, very wimpy!! Girl cat is very feisty, likes to scratch, very territorial and appears to have mood swings. And a Daddy's girl of course....

DottyDot · 20/05/2009 17:32

another vote to get two if you're going to get kittens. We got two a couple of weeks ago and they're just gorgeous - they keep each other company, fight, play, clean each other and sleep together. Sooo cute and two isn't twice as much work as one..!

We've got a boy and a girl - the boy is very soppy and cuddly at the moment and the girl less so, but she's getting there! The boy is more adventurous and steals his sister's food...

We're going to have them both done as soon as they're old enough and first injections in the next week or so!

surreylady · 20/05/2009 18:29

Also had two- but if had to chose one would go for a boy - have had two boys who were both very close and affectionate to me - Dylan who we very sadly lost last year - greeted me from work and followed me around the house when I was at home - our girl that we still have is over affectionate and sweet with the children but not the same in terms of companionship

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2009 18:48

well he seems okay so far, pee'ing lots so must be doing something right,
dd2 might love him to death though so have to keep an eye on her, don't want to shout at her because the other 2 dcs aren't so keen and would like her to like animals abit more than they do

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/05/2009 18:57

Plum, I'm so pleased. Do keep us posted about him.
