Very hungry cat, driving me mad!

Right, I have just fed him.

I have two neutered males, both 8. one is overweight and the other, skinny, one is always hungry. The fat one doesnt eat skinny's food, he probably gets food elsewhere, and I give him dried food for older/fat cats. The skinny one has wet food advised by the vet, but he begs for food all the time, meowing for hours.

Today I was having a sandwich in the garden and he grabbed food from my plate.

how much is it safe to feed him, anyone know?

IF I was you I'd take him back to vet and find out why and also look at giving him 3 small meals a day Seperatly from the other cat.

peggotty · 17/05/2009 18:29

Are they both wormed? Or it could be thyroid problems with mr.skinny, but that's usually in older cats.

onegiantleap · 17/05/2009 18:41

Thanks both,

Yes I worm and flea them every month with stronghold. the vet said he was not underweight but 'lean'. But I wonder if he is not absorbing food or something?

I been giving him half a tin a day in two meals, sometimes he gets left overs as well. Im sure he could eat a whole tin a day, do you think thats ok?

If he gets hungry frequently perhaps three meals is better for him, I'll try that.

Fatso never gets a chance to steal food from him, though, it disappears in seconds.

Thanks both

I'd double check that the bigger one isn't stealing as I've got 3 and I was sure they're not eating each others but I've since caught them and it makes sense as like you I've got a big one and a little one!! lol.

Mine have half a tin each in the evening and 2 handfuls of biscuits in the morning (just to give you an idea of how much)

onegiantleap · 17/05/2009 18:56

Oh so I'm not giving him that much then, I am going to increase the food for a month and see what happens to his weight, I'll weigh him tonight.

I will keep a close eye on them, if I catch fatso stealing its easy to feed them separately isnt it. Sometimes I feed him again if he is around and fatty isn't, extra treats only seem to make him want more though.

Golly I feel bad I may have been starving my cat!

No dont feel bad. I think its hard cos they're such small things.

Try bulking up the meat with some biccies (these lot get a small handful with their meat)

Dont feel guilty though

onegiantleap · 17/05/2009 19:39

ok he isnt allowed dried food because of a bladder problem. He has a bit of rice or potato or something with gravy as an extra.

He has just come in and had his next meal.

Did I mention the fridge lock I have fitted as he can open the fridge!

I have 2 neutered males aged 3. They have half a big tin each twice a day, ie 2 big tins a day between the 2 of them (plus whatever else they get outdoors). I think you need to give your skinny cat a bit more to eat.

mwff · 17/05/2009 19:45

our tiny cat eats like a flippin horse too - regularly wormed so is prolly not that - just feed him when he yells loud enough these days he has pouches and prolly has 3-4 a day. he's ancient now though so might be something actually wrong i suppose, never occurred to me, he's happy enough otherwise.

onegiantleap · 17/05/2009 20:06

Okay he weighs 10lbs
I am going to feed him one whole tin a day from now on.
Sorry skinny!

We have a skinny female cat approx 13yrs old who was constantly hungry, ate loads but didn't put on weight.

It turns out that she has an overactive thyroid so is now on medication for the rest of her life.

I think its quite simple for vets to check the thyroid

onegiantleap · 17/05/2009 20:17

thankyou norbert I will get it checked at the vet .Pegotty mentioned this earlier as well, saying as yours it is common in older cats. He is now nine, middle aged?

I think I'm right in saying that if they have thyroid problems when they are younger it can be more easily corrected with surgery ie. a one-off treatment/expense rather than on-going as it is with tablet.

The oder they are, the more risky surgery is.

Hi i have three adult males and they weigh between 10 and 13lbs (haven't weighed for a while) And they have 1 tin each a day. I also dont feed dried as one of mine has bladder problems so it's easier. It sounds like you need to increase the amount he has
