Dog lovers help please - a good dog for apartment living

Me, DH and DD (aged 3)love dogs and we have always said we will get one when we get a house in the country.

A friend of mine sent me an e-mail that said "Living is not waiting for the clouds to go away but learning to dance in the rain."

I found it rather lovely and it made me wonder about our longing for a dog. If we wait until the perfect moment maybe we will never get one.

So we have started researching for good breeds for apartment living.

We live in a friendly town, in a tiny apartment but within walking distance of a woodland.

During the afternoon when I am at work and dd at school we would employ a dog sitter - as I wouldn't want to leave any dog for a long time alone.

So.... any ideas for the perfect breed for us?

Thank you for your time and thoughts they mean a lot.

greyhound. they aren't called the 40mph couch potato for nothing! also 100% sociable with people (especially children) and other dogs and only require 45 mins to 1 hr walkies a day.

We have a basset hound and she is the sweetest, gentlest lovely dog. Amazing with children. Just this morning we were stopped as a 3 year old and 1 year old wanted to say hello and she sat there patiently being stroked. Underrated breed but need a proper breeder.

Only thing I'd worry about is stairs as they need to be careful for the first year to avoid strain on growing legs and back.

Should say they can be stubborn and hard to train and known barkers. We knew this so focussed on barking first as we live in a terraced house, absolutely no issues with barking now and able to be alone (for limited periods).
