neighbour has complained about barking, what do i do?

my dog recently learned how to scale a bit of rough ground at the back of my yard. the problem is, when he gets up to the top he can see my neighbours two dogs and he stands barking at them. the climb up is too vertical and high for me to get up so aside from calling and coaxing him down i have to wait til he decides he is ready. now one of my neighbours has complained to another neighbour about it. i completely understand her frustration. i feel the same, however i dont want to keep him in the house all the time, i think he should be able to stay out when the weathers good and explore his environment but what do i do about the barking? should i get a barking collar?

Fence off the bit he climbs up?

Fence of the rough ground?

Monkeyandbooba · 12/05/2009 19:24

Ditto

yep, im working on that. im just waiting to have this baby before i start.(38+5) have bought fencing an plants to grow up through it. im just thinking in the meantime it could become a problem.

can someone do the fencing for you? if not ask the neighbour who has complained about the noise if they can do it maybe?

tigana · 12/05/2009 19:30

fence sounds like a good plan to me.
We tried the collars that make a high pitched noise when the dog barks for our 2 dogs out of desperation/embarrassment when a neighbour politely complained. The dogs just looked mildly bemused for the first couple of barks (looked around for source of noise!)...then carried on barking regardless.
Maybe the citron sprays would have been better, but they are a lot more expensive.

she's a retired lady, we dont get on very well so i dont think she would do it. OH isnt home til friday (navy) and my dad is away till the weekend with work. i'll just have to make a start myself. the sooner its done the better. dont want to make things worse with neighbour.

Oh right, well in that case I'd limit his trips outdoors until OH gets back to do the fence!

Do her dogs bark back? Maybe try only letting him out when hers are in or is that not workable?

booyhoo · 12/05/2009 19:47

hers are out all the time, its not the neighbour with the dogs that has complained btw, she just passed on the message about older neighbour being upset. yep i think longer walks and keeping him amused indoors is the plan for the next few days. yes the other dogs bark back but i imagine if mine isnt up there taunting then they wont bark either.

Dog politics are really hard! DP's dog luckily doesn't bark too much but the next-door-but-one dog barks at him all the bloody time. We don't really notice though - some people are more bothered than others I guess.

booyhoo · 12/05/2009 19:51

the barking bothers me so its bound to bother someone who doesnt have dogs. it really grates on me.

i would talk to the neighbours. just say you're aware of the problem, you've got the stuff ready to sort it out but you can't do anything yourself just yet.

at least then they know you're working on it and not just ignoring them
