Are puppies always hungry?!

My pup ate 500g of grapes a few weeks ago which she'd nicked off kitchen worktop.... sorted by the vet.

Last night she had walk and then her food - I return to kitchen 10 minutes later to find she's stolen carrot cake off the worktop and eaten 3/4 of it!! She looked like she was about to burst.

She'd just eaten her tea - I still can't believe she managed to eat 3/4 of carrot cake loaf. Boys were not impressed!

Are puppies always hungry?

Poo today has been interesting - yuk.

Labrador? (sp?)

bella29 · 12/05/2009 15:25

Carrot cake didn't have (toxic) raisins in, did it?

Yes, some will steal anything and everything. Dogs are natural scavengers.

Bella29 - thankfully no raisins.

I'm going to have to keep the worktops food free when I'm not there!

She's about 1/4 lab.

What is the rest? My GSD is a constant counter surfer, scavenger and will eat anything, and I mean anything. I heard dd shouting the other night and went out to find her trying to stop him eating a maggoty bird .

However he seems to have the constituation of a goat. He is also very good at sneaking a quick snaffle when I turn away from the counter so I am now teaching him that, when I am using the surfaces for food, he has to lie down by the door or go into his bed/crate. It may take a while though as the dinner table is still a work in progress

my border collie pup is really good around food.

She is a very fussy eater though and even refuses dog treats

pigsinmud · 12/05/2009 20:13

The rest is 1/2 springer and then dash of collie and staffie. God- maggoty bird. She did leave a dead rat by the river the other day - she sniffed it and carried on walking.

A friend has her sister and she said they can put her food down and she saunters over after a few minutes. My pup is sitting, tail wagging waiting for hers!

Yup, that's my pup, "wheres my dinner, go on, where is it, gimmie gimme" all infered by the ears eyes and tip of the head

He sits as sson as I pick his bowl up and won't move until he is told to

Paula, I suppose a fussy eater is a blessing and a curse, it is great that the concept of not eating everything in sight has got through easily but on the other hand you worry about them actually eating! I know an adult dog who has never grown out of his fussiness. He is now 4 and very underweight, the owner is actually thinking of asking about putting him on one of those tubes to build him up a bit. The thing is he still functions as any other dog, plays, runs, loves dogs and people. It is all quite difficult and very distressing.

KC - I don't want to know why you had a maggoty bird on your worktop. Suffice to say that should an invitation to luncheon ever arise, I shall probably be busy that day

Counter-surfing dogs are of course the perfect accessory for the minimalist home.

You have no choice but to keep those surfaces clear

And OP, whatever distance you reckon pup can reach, add an extra few inches for how much you need to clear.

They can really

stre-t-c----h

when they want to

KingCanuteIAm · 13/05/2009 13:18

Aw bella, they are a delicacy you know - well that is what pup is trying to tell me anyway - when I said I went out to find, I meant out of the house... really, honest I did
