Puppy Jabs???

BabyDubsEverywhere · 10/05/2009 19:24

Could anyone offer me some advice, i have a 9 week old puppy. He is GSD x Rottie, very sweet, loads of energetic bursts. We are dying to take him for a walk and get him out and about but we are having lots of conflicting advice about when we can do this. Does he need to be innoculated first. SO many peole we know say that for mungrels / cross breeds, they don't need the jabs anymore as their immune systems are strong etc. Im not so sure, my heart says get them done anyway, but dont want to waste time or money on none essentials iyswim. So im leaving it up to mums net jury - to jab or not to jab, experiences and opinions both welcomed and appreciated. Thanks

EVERY dog needs vaccinations before going out properly. No breed is immune.

Yes vaccinate. There are always people who say they've never vaccinated their dogs and they've been ok, but it's not worth the risk. You can let the puppy out into your back garden. I worked at a vets and saw a few puppies come in with parvovirus (one of the things vaccinations protect against) and it's a horrible disease that they often die from.

Another thing to consider, other than the pup's well-being is maybe one day you'll take the dog to a kennel for boarding if you are away or hospitalised. The kennel won't entertain an un-vaccinated animal.

My vet advised that teh pup could have the first jabs at 8 weeks and was then fine to go out in areas where few dogs visit (so the risk of an infectious dog having toileted there was low) and could be socialised with dogs that were fully vacinated and up to date with boosters. I have heard this from a few different vates actually but, of course, it is your risk and it could go wrong!

As standard though, do vaccinate and keep it up. Cross breeds may have a strong immune system but it is not up to the types of things the vaccinations cover. For the effects of Parvo just watch a couple of episodes of animal cops housten - there is nothing quite so sickening as seeing a dog bleed to death to make you realise the value of a few£ injection.

Thats enough for me! thank you very much. When can he start vaccines? He's 9weeks now, is it a course like baby jabs or 1 off? Does he have to finish a course before he can out?
Sorry if this seems like loads of questions i should be asking a vet but lost alot of trust in vets when being badly advised ref my cats a few years ago. I want real people advise if that makes sense!

8 wks and 10 weeks
I actually took our puppy out very locally as know all local dogs are vaccinated ( small village)

Piffle · 10/05/2009 19:52

And you may find being unvacc invalidates insurance.

peggotty · 10/05/2009 19:53

He can have first set now, 2nd set usually 2 weeks later. it's advisable to keep him away from other dogs until a week (I think) after the 2nd set. Unless you know other dogs are vaccinated. It's frustrating when you are dying to take them for a walk and show them off but it's worth waiting to be sure he's safe. Good point about kennels. Be very wary of kennels who would accept unvaccinated dogs, in fact, avoid them!

Have you got him insured? Please say yes.

My dog has just come home from an operation on her eye, she has many more visits to specialist and much more medicine to come. So far the bill stands at £1800.
Thank the lord for Tesco insurance!!

BabyDubsEverywhere · 10/05/2009 20:02

Thank you all, will book him in in the morning.

Not got the insurance sorted yet, but i will be, only picked him up Tuesday night and things have been a bit of a rush since then. Think hes pretty much house trained now though and have been able to leave him on his own last night, i have been sleeping on the sofa next to him since we ahd him, but he was fine last night, cried for 10 mins then went to sleep - wish my toddler was as easy as my pup!

ooow, one more quick question. flea stuff and worming. when do i start these, and what products would you reccomend?

OP posts:
2sugarsandapuppy · 10/05/2009 20:45

The vet should let you know.

KingCanuteIAm · 10/05/2009 20:59

Some products mean worming every two weeks at this age, some every month. Fleas depends on what you use, as 2sugars says your vet will advise you. Even if you choose to use pet shop stuff at some stage please go with the vet for the first few months at least, damage caused to the gut by worms at this stage can cause life long problems.

I have a 9 week old pup too , wow on the house training were still peeing every where .

Mines having his 1st injection tomorrow and then the 2nd in 2 weeks. I have been taking him on the school run and to peoples houses but he is carried everywhere.

Did the person you got your pup from not give you info on when to worm next? Mine has been done every 2 weeks. If in doubt then worm and give a flea treatment (check with vet first) im using pancur paste and frontline. There the same as you get from the vet but you can now get them from pets at home.
