Has anyone had a cat put to sleep in the past few years?

My 15 year old cat has a badly distended stomach. I'm taking him to vets soon but I'm pretty upset and hoped you could tell me what I could expect the vet to say and what sort of options you get regarding the body.

Sorry to hear about your cat Chuffinora . When ours was about the age of yours and very poorly we took her to the vet and they agreed to put her asleep for us. We had to sign a form and then we said goodbye to her and left. We preferred that they disposed of her body for us, which they did. I expect though, that you could have it if you wanted to. They were very understanding and although it was a very painful experience for us, the vet was very reassuring and we felt that we were doing the right thing.

Good luck XX

We had a cat put down a couple of years ago. They offered to have the body cremated for us. We could have the ashes if we wanted but didn't, we've got loads of photos of him and didn't feel it was necessary.
Sorry about your cat. It's a horrible time. He sounds loved.

My 19 year old cat was put down a few months ago. Basically the vet gave me the option of trying to keep her alive a few weeks longer (she had kidney failure) but was quite plain that it would be kinder to put her to sleep there and then.
I held her while he did the injection - she didn't seem to notice and died very peacefully within seconds.
He wrapped her up in her towel for me and put her back in her carrier as I chose to take her home and bury her in the garden.
The other option was for me to leave her to be cremated and either have her ashes back or they would scatter them in a pet cemetery.
They were really lovely about it and made the whole experience as easy as possibly.
So sorry to hear about your cat

We had our old mog pts last year. She was 17. DH took her. I don't know what options there were but he brought her home and we buried her in our garden.

My 16 yo went about 6m ago and my 18yo about 2years ago.

With both of them I was given the option of longterm treatment and exactly what it would entail for each. I asked her what she herself would do and she told me she would put the cat down (what I was inclined towards anyway).

On both occasions we settled the cat on my lap, she was given an injection and went to sleep (dh and dd and me all stroking her). The first one, my dear old (very old) cat weeeeeeeeed all over my lap when she died.

That would have been the end of it for, but dh insisted on having them both cremated separately and getting their ashes, which were sent in a beautifully made wooden box with a bronze/brass name plate. Total waste of money imo (about £100), but dh is a sentimental old git.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

Ollie had a liver disease and the vet advised we put him down. She was really sympathetic and talked me through all the details and options first. It was very peaceful. We brought his body home and he's now buried under the tree in his favourite sunbathing spot. We all miss him. Thanks for your kind replies they really helped.

Oh dear Chuffinnora - I'm so sorry, it looks like we both had our cats put to sleep with exactly the same illness last week.
I'm glad to hear it was peaceful for you all though.
