New puppy - now or September?

bella29 · 06/05/2009 09:44

Am adding to my brood - 11 yr old mongrel and one year old lab Also 2 dc (5 and 7) plus DH.

Have been stalking liaising with a good breeder for my new pup and I now have a choice: a litter ready now, or one in September.

Very very teeny tiny chance we'll go away for a week in summer, but quite unlikely. Otherwise, no real fixtures/events to work around, and no real change in my routine between term time and schoo holidays.

Please vote for May puppy or September...

TIA

Bella

Sure thing, KC. Do you think we ought to pack some hobnobs?

What kind of puppy have you got again? Apart from a muddy one?

A GSD, he is 4 months now so the hard work is just beginning!

Bring the hobknobs - but no puppies, they will eat them!

newpup · 07/05/2009 14:01

Bella
What are you doing?
I am only a little bit jelous!

A dobe how fab! Aghhhh how I miss those 5am trips to the garden and those sharp little teeth on my ankles!!!

Was that really the best part of a year ago!

And whilst the hob nobs are out... Thank you

newpup · 07/05/2009 14:02

Do I have to change my name now to ...

Notsonewpup?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 14:04

you stalk-NEVER

may/spet/may/sept

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

blonde does like fence sitting

we had puppy in sept, and to me much better to get then as in summer hols you can go out and about with your children - even for whole day if need be - with a puppy you cant

how about adding to your 5 and 7yr old?

or adding to hammy?

seriously sept when kids back at school

Hello, my fellow PJ's in the garden and Dawsons Creek-at-6am puppy potty trainer

Doesn't seem like a whole year ago, does it?

How is your girl doing after her op? Hope she's feeling better.

KC - a GSD was our second choice, by a very narrow margin. 'Twas the hair that tipped the balance. I'm not fastidious but when you have 2 dogs already, plus cats.....you get the picture I was also swayed by having had a Dobe before, and since I will be the one dancing round the garden in my jammies again, I outvoted dh

Fabulous dogs (GSD) though. That Chihuahua didn't give him indigestion did it?

OP posts:
bella29 · 07/05/2009 14:10

whoa - multiple x posts!!!!

Blondie - you're mad. Totally mad. Perhaps that's why we get on

Ruby - no. Going to be oh-so disciplined. For once in my life

throckenholt · 07/05/2009 14:12

so - did you decide ? maybe I should read the rest of the thread ?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 14:13

mad? me - never

rather a hammy than a new puppy

db wants to breed from our MONSTER and have informed him, as has his dw that he if does and he keeps a puppy that he will need to find a new wife and nanny!!

bella29 · 07/05/2009 14:20

Throckenholt - haven't you had enough?

Blondie - aw! Cute massive puppies (just doesn't sound the same as cute little puppies does it?).

Funnily enough, I was thinking about your wee laddie last night. I wasn't on MN, I was sat doing personality tests on my dogs (yes, I think I agree I need to get out more...)

here

Under 'resources' there's a personality test for your dog. They also talk about Bernese Mountain Dogs and how their personality is suited to pulling their little carts. You really really need to get one of those you know

We should all do the test and compare! Not as juicy as those Cosmo quizzes, but hey

I love GSDs and have had one before, I love Dobes too but have not had one before - actually our GSD is not our choice, he was dumped on us - not that I would be without him of course! THe hair thing is right, I am noticing it already and he still has puppy fluff

I like the look of that test, it will be interesting to do it now and again in 6 months time - see how things change! I may get to it tonight when I have done the other stuff I should be doing now

Blondie, your dog sounds lovely - if you have pups I want one pics!

throckenholt · 07/05/2009 14:39

actually I don't really like hobnobs - but since you were being so generous I didn't want to turn you down

KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 14:40

actually blondie if you have pups I want a share of the money from the publicity - of course I actually meant if your dog has puppies!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 14:41

nothing wee about our 10mth puppy

hes the size of a shetland pony!!!

and he makes a cart sledge puller in the snow

though he is a great swiss mountian dog, not a bernese one - hes short haired - though seems to be shedding his fur at moment - much to the cleaners disgust!!!!

Oh Blonde, what a lovely dog! We have one of these in our puppy class and he is th only dog have met with bigger paws than my dogs

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 18:48

we have HUGE paws!!!

he always did

bella29 · 07/05/2009 20:30

Sorry for calling your pony puppy a Bernese, Blondie. I am forever marked by having fallen madly in love with a Bernese on trips to a Swiss cafe in my youth....

Your boy is even lovelier though

Now, I do hope you have all done your personality tests? I shall be taking them in for marking later

Getting a bit sick of hobnobs now (not hobknobs, KC, you filthy minx!). Anyone mind if I swap them for these rather yummy vanilla cupcakes I just baked?

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 20:46

Ooh, homemade cupcakes yum!

I have done the test, although I am not sure it is designed for puppies really! GSDs are supposed to come out highest in fight and lowest in pack - my baby is exactly the opposite - if only we can find a way to keep him like it

How did yours come out bella?

bella29 · 07/05/2009 20:53

Don't worry, KC - it says somewhere in there that fight behaviours aren't fully developed until 2 yrs old.

Mine both came out very high in pack & prey (that's why they are so lovely) and my lab is higher in flights than my GSD x lab, but that's not saying much!

On the website there is also a very extensive aptitude test for puppies. It's so interesting, dontcha think?

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 21:05

Very interesting! I didn't see the puppy test, where is that?

He came out nearly as high in prey as pack so very similar to yours. Like I say I would be very happy if I could freeze his personality now. Each day a bit more testosterone kicks in and he gets a little bit more laddish
