Mummy cat going for kittens - advice please

2 kittens now 16 weeks old, fully weaned, feeding fine but mummy seems to have totally rejected them. Just in the past few days, she's been spitting and hissing at them and even taking a swipe when she thinks we aren't watching. She won't tolerate them anywhere near her - this is the same mummy who only last week stressed soooo much if she couldn't see them . However, she is in season at the moment - could this be the reason [hormones ].Am hoping it will pass as we are keeping the kittens - ds would be gutted if we got rid of them now.

Or could it just be good old jealousy . If cats suffer from PND then mine has it bigtime

Not sure but maybe she is ready to let them go now that are weaned?

We kept one of our kittens from a litter and the mother cat hates him and has never forgiven him (or us) to this day. She still takes a swipe at him four years on

Hmmm - your mummy cat sounds like me!

If there's two of them and only one of her she maybe does feel quite frazzled and stressed by the situation? Can she get away from them - does she go outside?

Sounds normal. Cats don't have the same maternal feelings we do. She's telling them they are old enough to leave home

that's about the age our female gets bored and annoyed of her kittens... don't worry, once they stop trying to go to her for attention she'll calm down and will happily ignore them 24/7.

the only times she's paid attention to an older kitten after this is when she's been about to have more kittens and she got cranky and felt the need to randomly attack them again, once the kittens were born she's been perfectly happy to let the older kittens babysit for her though

keep in mind, it's not natural for kittens to remain in close proximity to a female cat... especially male kittens... so her instincts are telling her to chase them off to find new territories.

can i ask, are you planning on letting her have more kittens? if not you need to get her to the vet now for spaying.

Sorry, it does sound as though she's telling them it's time to leave the nest.
