Need a name for a female golden lab!

Just been to see a litter or 12 day old puppies and we will be getting a female as soon as they are old enough. She is gorgeous! Tiny, eyes not even open yet.

We need a name!

We did have a male black lab for a very short while and I like Murphy for him and DS wanted to call him Theo (after Theo Walcott who plays for Arsenal!).

We have no girl names though so need lots of suggestions please.

I like Willow.

And I am not trying to steer you away from Bella.

Honest

Buda · 02/05/2009 21:58

DH raises his eyebrows in a quizzical fashion to most suggestions. sigh. And he wonders why I named DS?

Being Irish i would like something Irish. Liked Murphy but it seems masculine. Kelly is a possibility. DH likes it wonder of wonders. I also like Tara.

I like Madra!

Or Bui? Can't imagine DH standing calling Bui though.

My sister (who hates dogs!) is Orla jellybeans. Not sure that would go down well!

Nothing grabbing me. Am I too fussy?

Molly

scardypants · 02/05/2009 22:57

Right I've had a bit of a google for Irish names.

They're all human names but ye might like one so here goes...(I've put the meaning after)

Sorcha (surk-ah) - beautiful

Neala (nee-la) - female champion

Saoirse (sear-sha) - freedom, liberty

Keela/Kyla - beautiful

Kyna - love, affection, esteem

Caoilain (kay-linn) caol "slender" and fionn "white, fair, pure." Several saints were Caoilainn and one was described as "a pious lady who quickly won the esteem and affection of her sister nuns by her exactness to every duty, as also by her sweet temper, gentle, confiding disposition and unaffected piety."

Any of them? Too human?

KingCanuteIAm · 02/05/2009 23:10

@ Bella - I am actually quite partial to snails you know

I have not managed any more ideas but I have to step in and let you know that Tara is a German Shepard Dog name - it is traditional!

Dd has just suggested you call it Smelly because all dogs are smelly

scardypants · 02/05/2009 23:15

Put in the full meaning on the last one because it's got a more religious meaning and don't know your faith so wanted to make sure you knew it's background.

I'm off for a while. Chat ye later cailin

higgle · 02/05/2009 23:25

Teasle? Bramble?

midlandsmumof4 · 02/05/2009 23:31

Not Irish but how about Cassie?

Lubyloo · 02/05/2009 23:39

Irish names:

Erin

Shannon

Madigan (means little dog and could shorten to Maddie/Mads)

Or non-Irish I like:

Flossie

Sage

Edith

April (as she was born then!)

Buda · 02/05/2009 23:56

So many of these have real life connections I'm afraid. A friend has a DD called Willow and another has a Molly and yet another has a Casey. My sis is Orla and I am Fiona. Another friend has a dog called Bramble.

I like Cassie. And Madigan. I really like Madigan.

I liked Murphy for a boy. Will do a hunt of other Irish surnames that might suit.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. KingCanute - I don't think we will be going with Smelly!

I had a good thought, or so it seemed, to suggest the Irish term for yellow but as it turned out to be Bui that wasn't so good.

However, I found a list of lots of translations for yellow and these jumped out as being nice as names:
Amarela (Portuguese)
Kollane (Estonian) - also sounds a bit like Colleen
Sarga (Hungarian) - no good to you in Budapest though if you're still there (or am I getting hideously confused?)
Melemele (Hawaiian) - or maybe you could just have one Mele, which is a bit like Honey in various European languages
Melyn (Welsh)
Safra (Maltese)
Rumena (Slovenian)

Or you could just call her Blondie!

Buda · 03/05/2009 09:02

Thanks for all that thumbwitch. We are indeed still in Budapest. Good remembering!

Amarela is nice. Can't see DH going for it though.

if you are wanting an arsenal name (ds wanted to call his cat theo after theo walcott but she was a girl!) we considered fabregas, and very nearly went for Cesc! what about Robyn? after robin van persie! just thought of that!

anyway we ended up with a rescue cat called tiddles which we changed to tilly

what about
Camille
sky
honey
candy
solo
asha

Marne · 03/05/2009 09:30

lol, both my dd's names have been suggested

Buda · 03/05/2009 09:48

ilovepeppapig - I did think of Adie after Adebayor! Cesc a possibility too. Hadn't thought of Robyn.

Marne - so many names that have been suggested are names of friends, relatives or their DDs!
