Did someone say grapes are bad for dogs?

If yes - how bad?

Just walked in the kitchen and my 4 month old puppy has reached up to the worktop and eaten whole bag of grapes.

Do I need to panic/phone vet?

i think you just need to get a good supply of paper towels and not let him into any carpeted areas - prepare for poo

disclaimer - i know nothing of dogs, only what happened to an exbf's dog 15yrs ago.

KingCanuteIAm · 30/04/2009 17:50

Panic - no, Phone vet - yes. I am not sure how bad so I would make sure myself!

How big is your puppy?

MadameCastafiore · 30/04/2009 17:51

Yep they are very bad for dogs - don't know how many they have to eat though - DD read it in a mag at the vets.

Says this on a website - I think you should ring the vets!

Grape and raisin poisonings in Dogs:

Recently, there was a letter in the AVMA Journal from Dr. Gwaltney-Brant and others at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center discussing grape and raisin poisoning in dogs. Apparently, grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs when ingested in large quantities.

The grapes and raisins came from varied sources, including being eaten off the vine directly. The dogs exhibited gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion of the grapes or raisins. The amount of grapes eaten varied between 9oz. and 2 lbs., which worked out to be between 0.41 and 1.1 oz/kg of body weight. Two dogs died directly from the toxicity, three were euthanized due to poor response to treatment and five dogs lived. Due to the severity of the signs and the potential for death, the veterinarians at the poison control center advocate aggressive treatment for any dogs suggested of ingesting excessive amounts of grapes or raisins, including inducing vomiting, stomach lavage (stomach pumping) and administration of activated charcoal, followed by intravenous fluid therapy for at least 48 hours or as indicated based on the results of blood tests for kidney damage.

I have fed my dogs a few grapes every now and then for years, so I don't think there is a need to panic if a dog eats three or four grapes but if the whole bunch is missing from the table one day, it would be good to think about watching for any signs of a toxic reaction.

She is a mix - mother is springer and father lab/collie/staffie. She has long legs!!

I'll give the vet a ring.

KingCanuteIAm · 30/04/2009 17:55

And a jump to rival a kangeroo by the sound of it

Hope all is well, let us know what the vet says!

bella29 · 30/04/2009 18:06

Toxic - can cause renal failure (kidney failure) which won't necessarily show any symptoms.

Please call your vet now.

bella29 · 30/04/2009 18:07

And a toxic dose can be only 4 or 5 grapes.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 30/04/2009 18:09

Go to your vet- they will probably make her sick as a precaution, but the sooner after ingestion obviously the better (although I've never seen a dog actually go into renal failure with grapes, i'd say better safe than sorry )

pigsinmud · 30/04/2009 18:19

Have phoned vet. Going to ring back in a minute. Receptionist had a quick word with vet - was in middle of consultation - and initial response was just that there would be severe diarrhoea.

You may want to read this.

here

bella29 · 30/04/2009 18:25

I had a similar experience with an older pup and a much smaller quantity and my vet followed the recommended protocol - made him vomit, put him on a drip and did blood tests.

Perhaps another vet can advise what they would do?

beautifulgirls · 30/04/2009 19:57

No - INSIST your vet sees the dog. This can be life threating due to kidney failure, but all cases are different. If the ingestion was recent then they need to make the dog vomit up what is left in the stomach. If your vet says anything different tell them to call the vet poisons help line for accurate information.

pigsinmud · 30/04/2009 20:44

Dog is back from vets minus the grapes! They phoned back and said to bring her in - had been in touch with poisons dept. She was just over the line of what they consider safe. So had an injection to make her vomit and then an injection to stop her feeling sick. She brought up loads of grapes - she had eaten about 500g!

She is now feeling very sorry for herself.

Going back to check her over on Saturday morning.

Thanks for telling me to phone vet - I have been known to dither!!

Don't worry she will be back to stealing kangeroo jumping normal in o time

Seriously, glad she has been take care of. It is interesting to have an idea of how much is toxic, I would have had no idea at all!

Tillyboo · 03/05/2009 23:58

Onion skins are also toxic to dogs, as is the obvious chocolate ... glad I'm not a dog.

CKelpie · 04/05/2009 00:11

I had no idea grapes were poisonous for dogs.
When I was little we used to get fruit and veg from the wholesalers. On one occasion my parents had brought home this tray of grapes that were going cheap as they were getting too ripe for display. The tray was one of those plywood trays roughly 1ft x 2ft. Probably a few kilos of grapes I would guess.

Our collie cross spaniel troughed the lot overnight - I don't recall any after effects, although I would bet he was shitting through the eye of a needle for a few days.
He must have had a strong constitution.

Tortington · 04/05/2009 01:08

i didn't know that. my dog chases around the odd dropped grape

Desiderata · 04/05/2009 01:12

Dogs eat shit.

Puts it in perspective.

KingCanuteIAm · 04/05/2009 01:15

Not really Desi, shit is not toxic to dogs, grapes are

Desiderata · 04/05/2009 01:17

Oh, I do love that emoticon.

Not.

Desiderata · 04/05/2009 01:18

... but what if the dog shit had grapes in it?

KingCanuteIAm · 04/05/2009 01:23

Sorry, it was not really needed was it? My inner AIBU demons coming out

Desiderata · 04/05/2009 01:25
