i have refrained from taking my 8 month old pup on the school walk so far as im not sure how it wil be viewed by other parents, ie: its a nursery school and i have to go inside and up a set of stairs to leave ds there and collect him, which would mean tying dogs lead to something outside the school. would this scare the other children and is it unfair to the dog? also, how would i get him used to being left for the few minutes before i actually do it. i dont want him getting very upset and struggling to get to me.

I suppose it depends where you live but I'd never leave a dog tied up, even for a few minutes, as I'd be worried that someone might take him/her.

My children all love dogs (We have three) but lots don't and can get quite upset when they see one. A couple of my friends have children who are frightened of dogs and they're sometimes on the brink of tears when there's a dog nearby. I realise that dogs can't be kept in because some children get upset but it's probably not a good idea to actively take a dog to a place where there are going to be lots of very young children.

Do other parents at the nursery leave their dogs tied up outside while they take their children in/collect them?

no, ive never seen another dog around the school. i guess its best not to risk it, i wouldnt want to upset the other parents and i would hate for the dog to get so upset and maybe lash out at someone through panic. we'll stick to the pre school walk.

i have started taking my puppy and i leave her tied up outside with all of the other dogs.

She isn't near the gates so the children don't have to walk past her to get in or out of school but can walk over to her if they want to without crossing any roads.

I used to get another mum to hold the dog while I dropped my 2 off.At least then the dog is under human control while you're not there. A few kids who passed were a bit wary, but nobody ever complained.

You only have to go on the doglost.co.uk site to see how many dogs are stolen, so I'd avoid leaving the dog out of view.
