i had a good week or so with getting up to a clean kitchen, now he seems to have reverted back to pooing and weeing in the kitchen (only overnight, NEVER in the day) i havent changed anything, ie his diet, he gets the same amount of time out everynight, arrrgghhhh, what do i DOOO?

Are you getting rid of the smell (biological washing powder solution) and making sure you don't react (in any way)?

If that doesn't work, try treating him when he does do it outside - he'll quickly learn that's where to do it.

bella29 · 22/04/2009 10:14

And is he still on 2 meals a day and what time is his last feed?

loopylou6 · 22/04/2009 20:01

Hiya Bella, i have been using bleach to clean the floor, hadnt heard about the washing powder thing? what is that? Yes he is on two feeds a day, his last feed is at 8 oclock at night

Seee, the thing is he knows where he is to do his business, as he go's outside in the daytime. To answer your question, i have been shouting at him in the morning when i find the mess, am i not supposed to do that?

No, don't shout. Firstly, it's pointless shouting unless they are actually in the act of doing something (he can't connect your shouting to something he did even 5 minutes ago, let alone hours ago), and secondly, he hears you shout and thinks : She's excited! Attention! Great!

Biological washing powder or liquid solution is good at breaking down the smell of urine, which if it remains can attract dogs back to weeing in the same place.

I'd bring his last feed forward to no later than 6 (I'm assuming you put him to bed at 10 or 11-ish) - that will give him more chance to clear his bowels before bedtime.

HTH & good luck

Have you tried using a crate at night to put him in?

loopylou6 · 22/04/2009 21:38

No i havent, i must admit its something i never tried, i just went for a normal dog bed

Honestly, I would swear by a crate for overnight. It just makes the cleanliness thing a breeze - and means they can't chew anything (cupboard doors seem to be a favorite IME )

KingCanuteIAm · 22/04/2009 21:45

Sorry, posted too soon...

If you use a crate take the time to get him used to it properly. Feed him in it with the door open, ask him to go in and lye down, then shut the door and give him his treat through it... give him his bones or chews in it etc.

Basically, anything to let him know going into the cage is a great thing. Borrow one at first if you can, you may find you only need it for a while.

brilliant, thank you king

Not until you have a puppy do you realise what a thing of beauty a poo-less floor is!

loopylou6 · 29/04/2009 09:14

Still having a clean kitchen floor

Am I getting confused or is this the same GSD pup you got early because he'd had a bad start?

I felt broody about him then and I still do!

loopylou6 · 29/04/2009 16:49

Hiya Bella, Yep, same pup, hes such a love, although mischievous he has now found how to open the back door and all the house doors himself lol. Its hard to believe looking at the size of him now how tiny and weak he was when i first got him at 4 and a half weeks, have you had a peek at my profile? There is a pic of him on there.
Why not get yourself one if you ares till broody?

OMG, loopy - he is so gorgeous.....

I am on the case, honest - I want a dobermann but dh would prefer a gsd.

I had been keeping my eye on a dobermann litter but it sadly turned out to be very small so I am looking again.
