my cat's being bullied

Hello everyone

I've only just found this section, which is a bit daft as it's on the talk front page

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my cat - she's 7 and very sociable with the kids and their friends, but quite timid with other cats.

She had a cat 'friend' a for a couple of years - she was happy for him to come into our house, and we often found them illicitly curled up together on ds1's bed! However he moved away last year and since then the back garden's been the subject of a territorial war amongst the other local cats.

The war seems to have been won by a very feisty tortoiseshell who's bullying our cat to the extent that she's scared to go out into the garden by herself. Even when we're out with her she's really jumpy and the slightest noise sends her scurrying back inside.

She's now too upset to go to the loo outside and has started using a cat tray again for the first time since she was house-trained.

DS1 wants to kidnap the bully cat and let it loose miles away, but I've overruled him! Any more sensible ideas as to what I can do? our cat's so unhappy

You can try going out and sticking up for your cat. Seriously! I read about this and did a couple of times with my cat. Personally, I think I was seriously over-reacting but I like to think it helped.

I would go out when my cat was in the garden and the bully cat turned up. I would have a water pistol of a cup of water and would throw it/squirt the bully cat.

I think if you can associate your cat in teh garden with the likelihood of you in the garcen with a water pistol it might work .

Behaviouism, pure and simple.

Huge water pistol super soaker thing and drench bully cat every time you see him in your garden.

Torties are always crap.

MuffinBaker · 13/04/2009 19:36

OOi! Mine is a tortie and gorgeous.

Rumpel · 13/04/2009 19:36

I sympathise - ti is happening to myu old ginger tom too. My big fat used to be hard cat just stares at his food bowl now instead of protecting the house so mystery bully cat keeps coming in and we have had urinating and all sorts Bought a microchip cat flap at the huge cost of £78 and it worked until we put it in the door! I go out and hiss and snarl and chase the other cats when I see them and I am going to invest in ahuge water pistol too! They keep crapping on my lawn too FFS!!! At least mine go in the soil.

You can also buy pet flower remedies pet rescue remedy which will calm moggy down think I saw them in Sainsburys pharmacy if not you'll get online.

KaiserSosay · 13/04/2009 19:36

they are often temperamental.

arent they?!

fruitshootsnweaveseasterbasket · 13/04/2009 19:38

Get a male cat, a really big ginger one with battle scars!

Rumpel · 13/04/2009 19:42

My big ginger one is terrified - he is a gentle sociable giant.

I have a female tortie - vets hate them as they are usually really volatile! She is lovely though and fab with kids. A big fat male black and white - used to be 'street' but too lardy arsed now. And my big ginger tom - he has always been a gentle soul and is 13 now. What are yours all called?

mimsum · 13/04/2009 19:54

we've tried the water pistol treatment, but bully cat is only put off if we're out in the garden too

whenever we see the fiend approaching we rush out hissing and shouting but our cat is now so thoroughly cowed that her fear is almost as much of a problem as the other cat's presence
