What does my dog need to be an outdoor dog?

Cos she's certainly not staying indoors anymore!

I have a fairly large secured back garden, grass, patio etc but what does she need? Shall I get her a kennel? Will she use it?

why don't you want her indoors anymore and what breed is she?

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 13/04/2009 10:59

i would say she definitely needs a kennel and bed in it

why cant she be inside

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:01

She's a chewer, a big chewer. Not only has she cost me a new freezer (and I am amazed she's alive) but new straighteners, she's wrecked my buggy (wrecked it 2 days after I got it by eating one of the straps). I've had enough of it so I want her to be an outside dog..

She's a border collie x jack russell & is 9-10mths old.

train her?

keep her away from these things?

rehome her?

instead of just dumping her outside

and one strap does maketh a wrecked buggy

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:05

It does in this case Trinity.

Considering rehoming her but not sure where to start, going to have a google around. Is it ok to do a 'Free to Good Home' dog these days?

She's kept away from these things as much as possible but continues to find/jump and chew on them.

She's walked at least once a day on a 2 mile track, sometimes twice a day..

I wouldn't do 'free to a good home' at all

she could be teething, not enough exercise

does she have teething toys, toys that are hers to chew to bits??

if you are going to rehome her, take her to a proper place

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:07

I took her on as a favour for a friend, his xgf got her for him and he couldnt keep her in his accomadation. I took her when she was 10wks.

She's still a puppy.

Have you trained her at all? Taken her to classes?

How much exercise does she get? How often?

Does she have toys to play with?

Does she get lots of attention?

Is she left on her own for any length of time?

When does she do the chewing? At night? When she's alone? When she is with you?

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 13/04/2009 11:08

buy a new strap
walk her more
give her teething toys

why did you get her?

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:09

She has loads of toys, balls etc.

I'm not planning on 'ditching her' in the garden, thats just for evenings/over-night rather than in the utility room (its large) where she was.

OP posts:
Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:10

So 2-4 miles isnt enough for her?

She does the chewing at night, she's not been to training classes as its impossible for me to take her there without 2 toddlers.

OP posts:
ilovesprouts · 13/04/2009 11:12

u can get stuff to spray on to stop her from chewing my dog grew out of it at 12 months ish

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 13/04/2009 11:12

so why can she chew all these things if she does it at night in the utility room?

funny place to keep your straighteners lol

looks like it may not be enough but you did say once on the two mile track.....sometimes twice mayeb she needs the 4miles or more every day

do you play with her, fetch and such

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:13

Have you trained her at all? Taken her to classes? No its impossible with 2 toddlers

How much exercise does she get? How often? 2-4 miles 1/2 times a day

Does she have toys to play with? balls, rope thingy's, rubber bone shaped thingy's, and the chewy things but shes not interested in them

Does she get lots of attention? yes from me, and the children (2 & 3)

Is she left on her own for any length of time? Only overnight, when I go to bed 1am and am up with the kids 7am/8am ish

When does she do the chewing? At night? When she's alone? When she is with you? at night but when she is with me she still takes things off to chew, kids toys etc

OP posts:
TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 13/04/2009 11:13

does she have any toys?

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:14

Yes she's played with a lot, on the beach when out walking, fetching sticks from the sea etc

OP posts:
oggsfrog · 13/04/2009 11:14

Has she had any training? Does she get played with much?

flier · 13/04/2009 11:15

have you taken her to puppy training classes?

Could she be bored? I have found the kong toys to be very good, you put a treat inside them so they have to work at getting it/them out.

I'm sorry you're having so many problems with her, but it is most probably down to boredom.

Claire2009 · 13/04/2009 11:16

Not at all Trinity, I just mean at nights when she's not 'supervised' I don't want her inside.

I didn't do research no, but I have previously kept dogs when I lived in France 2 yrs ago we had 7, we were living on a v v large farm then though so things weren't quite the same as living in a city.

What research should I have done? Dogs need walking, excercise, playing with, training etc?
