Did I overspend in my excitement or is this about right when we had NOTHING for the puppy before?

we bought

comfy flat cushion/bed thing to go in his crate
food bowl
water bowl
ball thrower
puppy kong
box of puppy kong mini treats
collar
non-extendible 'matching the collar' lead
extendible lead
engraved dog tag
long knotted rope type toy
puppy kong sqeaky tag toy

we are getting a crate from mil as she no longer needs it

do I need to get a gate/bars for the car to seperate the boot?

will be buying nappy sacks for poop

I am a terribe shopper and can convince myself that I need anything so am proud that I resisted buying a pooper scooper, a coat for Duke or a cuddly toy.

I have NOT been drunk, I just forgot

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 08:59

I know I'm boring the pants off all of you but pleeeeeease come and talk to me
I'll tell you how much it all cost

JuwEggsm · 11/04/2009 09:10

Sounds reasonable to me! Stuff for feeding, stuff for sleeping, stuff for walks and toys! But then, I don't have a dog so......

What kind of pup?

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 09:12

pic here

Wallace · 11/04/2009 09:13

What is a ball thrower - I thought that ws called a child?

Good luck

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 09:16

lol wallace

I would use the kids but there is only so many times the poor puppy can pretend to be soo excited about a ball thrown 3 feet

ball thrower

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 11/04/2009 09:19

have you been to your local pound shop or something similar, you can get dog poo bags there, althought the nappy sacks are scented.. also a ball thrower is often cheaper there..

I would continue feeding him the same food as the centre, is he fed twice a day still.

Dog tag is very important, I think you can be fined if your dog doesn't have one when out.
are you going to get him micro chipped? can the centre get it cheaper for you?

my dog bed is an single duvet, the covers can be washed, and when I go to work and she has her kong it can be opened out, when she sleeps its folded in half.

sounds like you've thought of everything..

mind you we did the same then we replaced nearly everything in about 6 months!

enjoy....

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 11/04/2009 09:19

just re red your message and you've already brought it all...

ignore me haven't got my lenses in!

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 09:25

lol tis ok rum

thanks for adding your experience

yes we have the tag with the legal requirements on it

the centre do the following for us

vet checked
vaccinated
wormed
flea treated
micro chipped
and neutured, but he is too young just now so we will we be given a voucher to do it at the right time

we will be given the food that he is having at the centre

have been told there is quite alot left and today I am going to find out what it is so I can get more

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 11/04/2009 09:36

our dogs 'gotch day' is on Wednesday, we have had her 2 years... she is a rescue.

KingCanuteIAm · 11/04/2009 09:42

Sounds perfect to me, although I do second the folded up duvet thing as they are cheap and easy to replace.

Kongs are great, you can use meat paste in them as well as treats, it helps the treats to stick a bit and means there is something else to go after once the treats are gone - also they encourage them to really chew at it, which is great for their teething!

All you need now is a ball on a rope and you are set

(Oh, btw, I thought they could be neutured at 6 months?)

Daffodingles2 · 11/04/2009 09:43

So you are getting him then Trinity... Fantastic! you must be really excited.
You've thought of everything (and a little bit more besides ]. Good Luck
(btw, our council provides free poo bags, you pick them up at the vets, so when you go, ask)

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 10:28

canute, apparently yes they can be neutured at 6 months and that has been normal practise but now there is evidence to suggest that early neutering can heighten the risk of certain cancers

disclaimer: this is just what the centre have said to me, I know nothing lol

I am going with what they say as everything else has made sense and I think they know what they are doing

KingCanuteIAm · 11/04/2009 10:40

Ooh, I will have to go and research that. My vet has not mentioned it, but then I have not asked about it yet and it was many moons ago that i had a dog nuetuered!

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 11/04/2009 16:27

Duke is now wearing the collar we bought him and we took him for a walk with the extendable lead we bought for him

just waiting on the home check phone call now

KingCanuteIAm · 11/04/2009 17:05

I can feel your excitment all the way over here

daisydotandgertie · 13/04/2009 22:41

How exciting!

The only thing I'd probably put off using for the time being is the ball chucker. Joints of growing dogs are very easy to damage by too much exercise and if my dogs are anything to go by, a ball chucker would def be too much.

Enjoy him - there's nothing like it!

EmmalinaC · 14/04/2009 15:01

I'd definitely get a dog-guard thing to keep him in the boot. He's bound to want to climb over the back seat and sit in your lap otherwise! We also tried those dog harness/seat-belts but he always managed to chew through them before we got to the end of our road.

I hope he's settling in!

FfreckleFface · 14/04/2009 15:13

I second third and forth getting a dog guard for the boot, and making sure it is secure.

I still have nightmares about Girldog breaking through ours, leaping into the backseat, then crawling into my lap while I was doing ninety driving at the speed limit in the outside lane of the M4. It's funny now, and I can only imagine what other drivers thought about the woman driving with the eight stone rottweiler in her lap, but at the time I was shitting myself. I couldn't push her off, she wouldn't get in the back seat, and Boydog was going mental behind the collapsed guard. I had to drive peering over her for about five miles until I could pull into the services, and then had to take the laces out of my trainers to lash the guard to to the backseats...

Enjoy Duke, sounds like you're going to have lots of fun with him.

bella29 · 14/04/2009 17:19

I get free poo bags at our local library

Definitely get a dog guard - apart from anything else, you really don't want a dog hurled at you should you have an accident.
