My dog had a tick, what do I have to do now?

I discovered a tick on my dog's jaw and removed it with tick tweezers.

Do I have to do anything else? Does she have to see a vet?

wave your arms about and shout 'a bloody tick'

MmeLindt · 06/04/2009 21:47

Did that.

And shouted Eeeeeeeeeeee yuk yuk yuk yuk when it went splat on removal.

Only know tick advice for children, am assuming dogs are treated with less hysteria.

Hedkandi - have you been on the sauce?

Watch it for signs of infection but if you are sure you got it all out he should be fine. Your dog, that is. The tick, I am afraid to say, will probably not make it ...

Rhubarb · 06/04/2009 21:49

Give it a smiley face to go with the tick?

Drusilla · 06/04/2009 21:51

He'll be fine as long as you got it all out. definitely no need for vets. I have to do weekly tick checks in the summer because ours gets loads. They are vile things!

bella29 · 06/04/2009 21:51

I just cannot believe how long it took me to get that, Rhubarb!

bruxeur · 06/04/2009 21:51

Check for more ticks.

Add them up. Adopt stern/benign expression, depending.

Definitely check for more though. Especially as well on any preverbal but mobile crawling children you may have.

MmeLindt · 06/04/2009 21:53

Will watch her, Bella, thanks.

She is due to go in and get spayed on Wednesday. Do you think I should call the vet tomorrow?

I am overreacting, amn't I?

Have checked dog thoroughly.

Will check DC tomorrow, even though they are extremely verbal.

We live in Switzerland where we have lots of nasty disease ridden ticks.

You are over reacting.

She will be fine.

Poor tick lost out in a very unequal contest with your tweezers but little fluffy dog will be fine.

Honest

bruxeur · 06/04/2009 21:58

Lol @ checking priorities...

MmeLindt · 06/04/2009 21:58

Thanks.

If you put one drop of essential oil of thyme onto tick it will literaly shrival up and die in front of your eyes(Sorry any pro ticks out there)

scienceteacher · 12/04/2009 08:48

Use Frontline on her - it protects against fleas and ticks.

ABetaDad · 12/04/2009 08:56

My Mum used to strike a match leave it to burn for a second or two, blow it out and then place the hot match tip right on the body of the tick where it joins the dog skin and then drag the tick out as the heat causes the tick to withdraw its hooks.

Never heard of tick tweezers but the only thing my Mum used to say was you have to go and check every day for a week to check the whole the tick has been removed and the wound site had not gone septic.

have you left the head in still? you shouldnt pull them off really like that, if the head is still in it can get infected.

what you should normally do is smear it with vaseline and this suffocates it, after an hour or so wipe the vaseline off and then gently twist it off. check that the head has come out attached on the body.
or if you do have frontline spary it with that, the frontline from the chemist though is not as strong as the one from the vets.

she cant still be spayed though, just tell them when they admit her in the mornong and get them to check it, just to see if the head is still there, they will have a good view when she is knocked out, on her back and has her et tube in.
