Any vets around ??

I have a cat who is 14. He has been regularly fighting with the cat next door and has had a few small nicks and grazes. Today I noticed that he has a 1" wound to his lower back leg. It is full thickness down through the skin. No bleeding and not red.

Now the question is, and I think I know the answer, will he need sutures. It is open but I have no idea when it happened ??

I am not a vet but I am a former vet nurse.

Even if it doesn't need sutures there is a very high potential for infection from cat fights so he will at the very least need some antibiotics.

Please take him to your vet.

Good luck.

I agree with Bella - it will possibly require stitches but if it is a fight wound it is at high risk of becoming infected. In the meantime clean it with lukewarm salted water and try to discourage licking.

We are taking him to the vets today. Now any tips on stopping them fighting ?? The other cat comes into our garden and he just protects his home, he is not the one who starts the fight.

Just a quick update. He has spent the day at the vets and $650 or £300 pounds later is back at home with two lots of sutures, clean teeth and a nice plastic collar that he lurves .

That will teach him to fight. We only just insurance as we have only just moved to Australia and you can't clain for 30 days after setting up policy .

He did the same thing last year but we had it covererd with insurance. Hey ho, he is better for his stitches.
