we have had Orca for 5 weeks now. She is now a 3 month old (border collie) puppy

She still wees on the carpets sometimes which means that I am always walking around behind her to make sure she isn't toileting inside and every morning we come downstairs to wee and poo (on her paper).

How do I get her to ask to go outside or to use her paper when she isn't shut in with it?

yes

and he never peed in it

We have a 3 month old puppy - springer, lab, collie mix.

We have a crate and so far she has had no accidents in it. She is now very reliable in the kitchen and goes to back door when neding a poo. Totally unreliable in the carpeted living room! I think this is beacuse we let her in there when we first got her and had quite a few accidents - she can now smell it I think.

I haven't yet removed the paper by back door at night. We have always left the crate door open at night. However, I think she is ready to be shut in for a short night as have come down to dry paper for a couple of mornings.

Crate is also brilliant for when she needs to have a rest, but won't give in!

Yes, I agree with Korma - don't use paper: it just sets up bad habits and you end up having to house train them twice.

3 months is still very young and bladder control will be almost non-existent. You have to be pro-active: take the pup outside as soon as they wake, after they've eaten and every hour or so in between. Praise like they have just weed pure gold when they do it outside, and use food treats too, but make sure you praise and treat the very second that they do it.

Not true - about me anyway, Blondie: I just babble on and no-one tells me to shut up!

Hammie sends you his best, and thanks you again for the porridge tip!

I got him some lovely juicy dandelion leaves the other day and he was so excited - the joys of spring

We never used a crate but were absolutely obsessive about looking for signs - and did tell him off most fervently when he went inside. Never used paper either.

He doesn't actually ask to go out, we put him out regularly and tell him to go pee and that seems to do it. He's now almost 6 months old.

welcome about the porridge - glad he is enjoying it

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 04/04/2009 07:44

ib, what do you do about night times? How does your dog let you know he needs to go outside?

strangly enough ours could hold the wee in all night if in his cage/bed - so a good 9/10hrs

so have a big wee before you put them in, and then again in the morning

what annoyed me was that during the day, i would let out for a wee,and then 5 mins later would wee indoors as well - but could hold easily for 9/10hrs
