Cat food - is the cheaper "complete catfood" as good as Iams / Hill's? And why the fark do they all have veg in them?

Not as if "beet pulp" or oats features highly on my cats' list of scrumptious foodstuffs.

Anyway, am trying to be frugal and thought this might be a way of cutting back costs. Obv won't do it if bad for cats though.

Cats don't need veg, they need meat that's where they get the protein from they need to function. Those with veg and cereals bollocks that companies put in there to make you think they are getting a balanced diet is just that, bollocks.

SobranieCocktail · 26/03/2009 16:35

I know! But they all seem to have it (in dried food).

So what's the best cheap catfud?

the very best cheap catfud is probably meat scraps cut with complete crunchies!

Wigglesworth · 26/03/2009 16:47

Everyone has different opinions, if you ask your vet they will tell you the expensive ones (hills/IAMS) cos they have to flog them and make a profit on them. Pets at Home and the like will also say the pricey ones too. I think the Whiskers/Felix/Kitekat are generally similar TBH.

My cat picks all the little green pea type biscuits out and leaves them allover the kitchen floor

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 16:50

I think Hills works out cheaper in the long run than cheap catfud.

Dh found a site where it is cheaper than in the shops and do free delivery here

differentID · 26/03/2009 16:51

I personally found my 2 would not touch go-cat/ felix etc after being on Iams/ Royal Canin. They are house cats so couldn't go else where for food and my girl especially lost weight. Have changed the budget on the cat litter instead.

RidiculousCrush · 26/03/2009 16:51

look for protein content, IMHO. go cat crunchies are 32%, iams is 32.8

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 16:53

Cheaper catfud often has a higher ash content. As ash is obv not needed it means your cat has to eat more to get the same nutrients than she would catfuds with lower ash content.

SobranieCocktail · 26/03/2009 17:07

V helpful! Thanks!

I don't think the food actually has ash in it. It refers to what proportion of the food remains as ash after burning, as a way of analysing mineral content or nutritional content or some such. I think....

My cat was always a picky bugger and would get fed up of whatever we were buying after a while, so used to get a random mixture of Iams/ Whiskas/ Tesco's own to keep him on his toes (suckers!).

SobranieCocktail · 26/03/2009 17:24

Was interested in the ash thing so googled and found this

OMFG

I was vaguely wondering if it would be cheaper (or at least healthier) for cats to eat cheapoid offcuts from butchers, and I found this

Ew.

Oh...it's not rude or anything (sorry to disappoint )

OP posts:
Wigglesworth · 27/03/2009 15:56

Erm does that mean the meat is made from cats? Dear God I hope not

SobranieCocktail · 27/03/2009 15:58

YES! Apart from the and aspect, yuck! I'm sure my cats would taste revolting.

don't they look appetising? (running to the bathroom to throw up!)

Stilla · 27/03/2009 21:50

Our cat WON'T even look at tinned/pouches of 'wet' food . She has iams and mixed pieces from the deli counter at Tesco/Asda atc

Alambil · 27/03/2009 23:08

my cat won't eat wet food - she eats dry complete; I get her Whiskas cos it's the cheapest for my budget... it lasts her about 3/4 weeks at a bowl a day - she won't eat any more than that!

MikeStand · 29/03/2009 00:20

Do not touch asda own brand. Mine and my mum's cats went scrawny and clumpy haired on it. Mine enjoys go cat rabbit, duck and whatever. However if we open a packet of prawns she appears from no where and won't leave you alone.
