Crates for cars

Hi,

We are picking up our new dog on Saturday - a rescue tibetan terrier and I have a question about dog crates.

We are going to need one for the car and possibly one for the house, and my question is probably a really silly one, but should they be the same size?

I am thinking that perhaps the one in the house should be bigger.

Also another question, should the one in the car go in the boot (i.e on a flat surface) or can it go on a back seat, and is there a gadget available to secure it to the seat?

Sorry for the questions, but I want things to be right - we have been waiting for a rescue dog for a long time and want to do things right from day one!

crate has to go into boot, no gadgets that i am aware of.

Re sizing, i would use the same one for house and car or have a tail gate made for the car and then just have a crate for house. What i would say is don't get one that is too big as the dog may feel insecure in it. As long as he can stand with room and turn 360 degrees in comfort it should be fine. I will try and find you a link for tail guards.

one like this it stays in the car all the time but doesn't take up room in the car for things like shopping, bags etc. They are pricey but well worth it IMHO.

i have bought from this company as well and never had any problems.

only problem being they don't seem to protect your upholstery/seatbelts from chewing?

my rescue dog did quite an expensive job on both rear seatbelts, so i invested in a fully enclosed crate.

I've just bought a crate to go in the boot of my car for my JRTx. Fits a treat and can easily be folded down if she's not in the car and I need the room for shopping etc. I keep it in the boot mainly for safety reasons (doesn't slide up and down the back seat) plus if she has an accident I'd far rather it happened in the boot than on the back seat! I also fold a plastic sheet and tuck it up underneath the crate and put plenty of towels/bedding in the crate so she's comfy and doesn't slide around in it!

what car do you have?

I'd just get a dog guard to stop it jumping over the back seat and a crate for indoors - cheaper then

I got one of those new crash tested ones. Brilliant!

Mine had a crate in the boot as a puppy to stop him chewing etc, but is now loose in the boot with a dog guard to stop him jumping onto the backseats. I don't really see the point of the tail gate guards. But if hes a chewer a crate in the boot is a good option.
You can get special car crates that slope to maximise floor space, but none of these would fit my car, so do plenty of sums and measuring first!
Good luck with him, tibetan terriers are lovely dogs!
