Am excited for you too!

Dd (8) was desperate for a dog. Us less so, But I researched it all (unbeknownst to DD) and finally chose the breed and decided on a puppy and took her on a train to visit 'my friend' (the lady with the puppies. I hadn't actually met her before).

When we got to the house there was a photo of a puppy on the door and DD said 'oh look, a pic of a puppy' and then we went into the house and there was the mummy dog and the basket of little puppies, ever so cute, and DD's face lit up and she squealed 'puppies' (she still had no idea at this point what was going on) and the lady pointed to the cutest and friendliest pup and said

'and that one's yours.'

Twas brill!

They were still too little to leave their mum but DD and I had a lovely train ride home thinking of names for her puppy.

Two years later and puppy is now a dog (obviously) and he and DD are devoted to each other. Tis lovely. Am so glad we did it.

And that worm thing? You can get tablets for those. You and the dog.

Trinityrhino · 24/03/2009 07:33

wow that sounds lovely merrylegs

Aw, Merrylegs, that is lovely.

DD and our dog bonded too, she wont sleep in the cosy bed in our room. She sleeps in DD's room on one of her jumpers.

Trinityrhino · 24/03/2009 07:50

couold i ask
lindt and merry
whose dog is it iyswim
are they family dogs but they really love your dds or are they your dds dogs

who looks after them mainly
I;m thinking that ours would be a family dog but I would be the main carer so does that mean it is going to atach to me or can I care for it mainly (walking and being with it all day) and it still attachh to dd as she plays with it so much and feeds it and walks it someitmes

Morning

I'm excited for ya!

We went to visit the mum to be (of the pup we are getting) on Saturday, she was an absolute dream dog - really loving and affectionate. Even when she was back in her pen you could tell she wanted more cuddles just by all the eye contact etc.

I endured spent 2 hours, whilst painting the shed with DD -aged 9, has been begging for a dog for 3 years - yesterday, discussing what pup will be called!

My only rain on your parade would be, are you sure this rescue centre allows dogs to be re-homed with pre-schoolers?

Trinityrhino · 24/03/2009 11:03

oh yes they definitely do
i have spoken to them and i have a friend who has rehomed twice from them with a 3 year old in the house

we are just needing to sort the fence out, as in put one up lol

Weeeellll, officially she is MY dog, but she tends to snuggle up to DH on the couch, and goes mad when he comes home. I am a bit pissed off about that, he was not keen on getting a dog. I am the one who feeds, walks, baths, brushed, take her to the vet, plays, trains and generally does EVERYTHING for the dog. Do I get some loyalty? Does she come to me? Does she hell, the little strumpet. As soon as there is a man in the house, I am nothing.

And now she has started sleeping on DD's ReadyBed.

Merrylegs · 24/03/2009 11:51

Hi Trin, am back. I was going to ask same thing about rescue actually - we eventually went for a puppy as our local rescue doesn't rehome to anyone under 8 and DD was only 6 at the time. Plus, I was very specific about the breed I wanted for our home and they don't tend to come up in rescue often.

If it wasn't for DD's pining (yes, she really was pining for a dog) we would never have got one BUT once he was here, he soon became all of ours. And even though DD loves him madly, I am definitely the main carer. Consequently I am pack leader and dog knows I am The Boss. He'll try things on with the kids (ie beg food) which he would never do with me. BUT he knows the kids are the 'fun' part of the house so he is loyal to us all really.

Although DD did initially say to her older brothers 'he's my dog', as she was the one who visited him first, she soon realised that the dog loves us all and her brothers think he is fab too. (Although they all fight about who is going to take him when they leave home!)

In fact, if it wasn't for the kids loving him so much I might very nearly have got rid of him between 7 months and a year - he was a fiend - chewing/whining/manic toddler type stage. Don't underestimate how much hard work it can be!

I stuck with it (of course!) and he is fab now. Very chilled and laid back....

Mostly.

bella29 · 24/03/2009 11:53

My puppy ate my sun lounger today

And I am the main carer for all our animals...

...but then it was me who wanted to get them in the first place

KingCanuteIAm · 24/03/2009 11:58

I would be worried that dd and the other dc would feel that doing that made it dd's dog most IYSWIM!

How about doing dds gifts and cards etc on the day and then bringing out a card to "all the children in the TR house", that way, dd will get the surprise on her birthday but no-one will feel that it is a bit unfair or feel pushed out of the excitment of it all?

I am excited for you btw but there is no way I am eating worms with you

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2009 13:44

So what sort of dog are you getting? Will you post cute puppy pictures for us when you get it?

MarmadukeScarlet · 24/03/2009 17:20

If that is to me, yes I will!

It won't be born for another 7 weeks if the mating was sucessful so no pics for at least 17 weeks!

This is Mum - Violet second big pic down

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2009 18:36

Actually it was to TrinityRhino, but I want to see everyone else's puppies too!

Uh-oh, that looks like a drooly dog

MarmadukeScarlet · 24/03/2009 18:37

Yes, I am concerned about the drool - they don't shed though, can't have it all!

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2009 18:40

The dooliest dog in the world (or the drooliest dog I have met, anyway) is an Italian Spinone.

Not shedding sounds like a plus point.
